Mrs. Eleanor Van Kirk Died Last Week at Wickatunk From Apoplexy. Mrs. Eleanor S. Van Kirk died at the home of her son, John Van Kirk, at Wickatunk last Thursday from apoplexy. Mrs. Van Kirk was stricken while sitting at the breakfast table and her death followed soon after. Mrs. Van Kirk was the daughter of Garret Conover and was born June 8, 1810 on the Conover homestead, now occupied by Gideon McDowell. The homestead included the farms of John Van Kirk, the late Gilbert Cnover, Schanck Herbert, and other lands and aggregated 600 acres. The old Scotch Burying Ground was originally a part of the land belonging to Mrs. Van Kirk's ancestors. On January 22, 1832, Mrs. Van Kirk was married to Schenck Van Kirk and as a wedding present her father built the house on the farm in which she lived up to her death and gave her the property. Mr. Van Kirk died fifty-one years ago. They had seven children, of which only two survive - Mrs. Mary Jane Conover, widow of the late John Conover of Marlboro, and John Van Kirk. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The latter is the three-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Hobrough of Matawan. Mrs. Van Kirk was a very amiable woman and was loved and respected by all who knew her. She had been a member of the Brick Church at Bradevelt since she was 15 years old and had always been a faithful attendent at church services. All through her life she had enjoyed good health, but of late yeaers her hearing had become affected. She was active about th house until the very last and every day performed some of the household duties. She did a great deal of fancy work an the glasses she were were over 200 years old. Without a doubt Mrs. Van Kirk was the oldest person in Monmouth County, being 98 years, 8 months and 5 days old at the time of her death. Dr. W. V. Wilson, who died a few weeks ago at the age of 97 years, was then said to be the oldest person in the county, but by the record, it is shown that Mrs. Van Kirk was over a year older than he was at that time. The funeral was held at the home of her son last Saturday, Pastor Davis of the Brick Church conducting the services, and interment was in the Brick Church grave yard.
