Larson, 92 years, 2 months, 1 week and 1 day, died quickly but peacefully on Wednesday evening of July 18th, 2012 at Arlington Place, Oelwein, Iowa where she has resided since May of 2008. Eleanor Lucille Kvasnicka was the first of three daughters to be born to John and Florence Safranck Kvasnicka in Oelwein. Larson, 92 years, 2 months, 1 week and 1 day, died quickly but peacefully on Wednesday evening of July 18th, 2012 at Arlington Place, Oelwein, Iowa where she has resided since May of 2008. Eleanor Lucille Kvasnicka was the first of three daughters to be born to John and Florence Safranck Kvasnicka in Oelwein. At age two she took the first of her many travels as she returned to her father’s homeland of Czechoslovakia to be baptized in historic San Klimenta Church, Prague. This Czech heritage was important to Eleanor throughout her life and in 1994 she returned to the Czech Republic with her sisters to renew that connection. She exhibited an early love of music, played in the Oelwein High School band, and then continued her studies at Cornell College where she graduated in 1941. She then taught music in Durant and McCallsburg, Iowa until she married U.S. Navy officer Lt. James Edward Larson of Woodstock, Illinois on June 11, 1943 in Seattle. She then returned to teach in Oelwein until the war ended. After the war they settled briefly in Oelwein to have the first of four children, Walter. In 1946, Eleanor moved to Ann Arbor where she and Jim did post graduate work at the University of Michigan and welcomed the arrival of John, son number two. The growing family then moved to Morgantown, West Virginia where daughter Anna was born. From there the family moved to the opposite side of the world to the Philippines where the United States was assisting in the rebuilding of the government. There Jane was born. In the course of Jim’s professional academic career Eleanor would live in nine states, seventeen houses plus the two years in the Philippines. Although never formally trained, Eleanor’s remarkable artistic skills were manifested in interior design where in each house she made remarkable transformations at little expense. She could sew, paint and decorate and had a flair for design. In 1955, the family moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. There she would apply her musical training to support the newly formed Covenant Presbyterian Church by directing the men’s, children and regular choirs. It was in Alabama that she first joined the P.E.O. Sisterhood and she remained an active member of that philanthropic group in various chapters across three states for over fifty years. In 1963, the family moved again this time to Columbia, South Carolina where she conducted music workshops for the University of South Carolina, SC Educational TV and the Head Start program, also teaching at St. Andrews Elementary School. She remained active in the Presbyterian Church becoming the church’s first woman Elder. It was during several summers spent in Boulder, Colorado that Eleanor refined her skill as an artist working in watercolors especially painting flowers in the wild. This endeavor brought her great joy and evolved into calligraphy and other graphic arts. All during this time she raised her four children and supported Jim’s role as Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of South Carolina. In 1986, Eleanor returned to her beloved Oelwein. The rich dark Iowa soil drew her into gardening and the Master Gardner’s program. She gleaned the greatest satisfaction from working in her garden and sharing it with others. She delighted in plants of all types and the natural environment of Iowa, especially Otter Creek. Her time in Iowa stimulated other artistic efforts. As she observed the world around, her she began to increasingly write poetry and became a member of the Oelwein Writers League, Friends of the Library, and the Tuesday Tourist Study Club. Several of her poems were published. In 2011, her sonnet Insomnia was awarded the First Place prize by the Iowa Poetry Association and published in the 2011 edition of Lyrical Iowa. As a child she had spent many an hour in Grace United Methodist Church and she renewed that connection serving on the Altar Committee and attending Adult Sunday School and Renewal Group. After the devastating fire on 26 December 1990, she served on the Restoration Committee. Her love of Grace United Methodist was illustrated by the hand-painted posters that seasonally decorated the vestibule window and the needle point kneeling cushions for the altar that she designed and helped create. Eleanor is survived by her husband, Dr. James E. Larson; her four children Walter (Janet) Larson of Klamath Falls, Oregon, John Larson of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Bradan Beech (a.k.a. Anna) of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Jane (Bob) Clancy of Sandia Park, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Trevor Clancy and Dana Larson; also her two sisters, Marcia Dykema of Wheaton, Illinois and Frankie (Royce) King of Oelwein. The memorial service for Eleanor K. Larson will be held on Saturday August 4, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. in Grace United Methodist Church. An open reception luncheon at the church will follow the service. The family requests that any memorial gifts be made to Grace United Methodist Church or the Oelwein Public Library.
