"Nora" Roling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Roling, was born 3-9-1889 near Salem, South Dakota. She grew to womanhood in the Salem area and on 10-26-1909 was united in marriage to John E. Bies. They lived their entire lives in the Salem area with the exception of five years in the Lake Preston, South Dakota area. Mr. Bies passed away 6-4-1965. Mrs. Bies passed away at Colonial Manors in Salem on 5-3-1977 at the age of 88 years. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Antonella Hipschman of Salem, SD; Mrs. Eleanor Ingalls of Hartford, SD; and Mrs. Alvina Nugent of Whittier, CA; two sons, Abehard of Montebello, CA; and Alvin "Red" Bies of Pierre, SD; three sisters, Mrs. George (Emma) Bernhard of Sioux Falls, SD; Mrs. Sam (Bertha) Burnham of Yankton, SD; and Mrs. Clara Franzen of San Francisco, CA; one brother, Ben Roling of Salem, SD; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister. Article taken from "100 Years of Faith 1885-1985" published by St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, South Dakota in 1985. John E. Bies was born in Decatur, Wisconsin January 12, 1875 to Etienne and Anna Bies. He came to South Dakota with his parents. When a young man he went to Cottonwood, Idaho and filed for a claim. He lived there a few years and came back and was married to Eleanor Roling on October 26, 1909. He worked for the railroad. In 1913 he took his family and aimed to establish a home in Idaho but due to health reasons came back to South Dakota in six months. They bought a farm near Canistota, SD and lived there until 1920 when they moved closer to Salem, SD. Roads were poor and his family was starting school at St. Mary's. Hard times came and they lost the farm. They moved to Lake Preston, SD for a number of years, but Salem called them back and they farmed a couple years and then moved to town where he ran John's Tavern from 1936 until his health failed and he retired in 1943
