She is survived by her children Brian (Susan) Jones of Thornton, CO; Laura Pendergrass of Fresno, CA; and Renee Lewis of Oklahoma City, OK. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three brothers: Cecil, Virgil, and Dean Corey. Eleanor was born on March 13, 1930 in Burlington, Iowa to John and Maxie (Martin) Corey. She lived with her parents on the family farm north of Morning Sun, Iowa until 1938 when the family "moved into town." Eleanor graduated from Morning Sun Consolidated High School in 1947. While in high school she was on the basketball team, served as the editor of the yearbook and worked in the local restaurant. After high school, she graduated from Burlington Beauty Academy in 1947. On June 28, 1950, she was right in the middle of giving someone a permanent when the love of her life came rushing in to tell her they had to get married that very night. It seemed his leave had been cancelled and he had to get right back to the ship in Alameda, California. So much for the church wedding scheduled for two weeks later. That evening she married Private Robert D. Jones (Columbus Junction) and off they went on a life full of adventure. Eleanor spent the next 22 years being a military wife in seven states and Stuttgart, Germany. This entailed being the perfect companion, executing protocol flawlessly, entertaining dignitaries, statesmen, astronauts, generals and the occasional wayward marine. During these years she raised her three children and was involved in all of their activities. She wore many hats; Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Women's Bible Study Leader, Church Youth Group Volunteer, Officer's Wives Club member and officer. Additionally she managed her household alone during four overseas deployments. Not to be slowed down after her husband retired from the Marine Corps she attended Kiamichi Area Vo-Tech School and earned her Practical Nursing License from the state of Oklahoma. With this license she worked for twenty years in hospitals and nursing homes caring for those who could not care for themselves. She took up the game of golf, played bridge, participated in many church activities, traveled, and enjoyed her grandchildren. She even ran for county office as a Republican deep in the heart of Democrat country. After returning to Iowa in 1980 she continued all of her favorite activities and became involved in a great number of new ones. Burlington Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Wapello Library Board, Louisa County Genealogical Society, Iowa State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries (SIPIC), Wapello Election Board volunteer, Life Choice volunteer, Wapello Study Club, Marine Corps auxiliary of the Hamilton-Walter Marine Corps League just to name a few. She had a host of friends and those who knew her well knew to never phone her before 9 AM but you sure better catch her before 10 AM or she'd be gone until bedtime. Eleanor always loved her family. She firmly believed in family bonds and over the years became the family matriarch. She always knew what was happening with everyone two to three generations down the line. This love of family prompted her to become involved in genealogy in 1962. Over the years, she researched, wrote, and published the family history for four different family branches. Her research took her to Sweden on two different occasions and allowed her to host her distant cousins when they traveled to America. Eleanor was a kind, gracious woman who was never too busy to help someone. She was an avid conversationalist who would talk about anything from religion to world events to Hawkeye basketball. She leaves a large gap in our hearts. We celebrate her life, gift of her love, the lessons she taught us, the hours of joy and delight we have had in her presence. We rejoice in the knowledge she lives in our hearts and know one day we will walk with her again on the streets of gold. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun, Iowa.
