From our Lena Valley Correspondent Eligeva V. Horton, the subject of this sketch, was born March 20, 1840, in Erie County, New York, and died at his home in Lena Valley on November 8, 1904, aged 64 years, 7 months and 18 days. On Dec. 25, 1859, he was united in marriage to Malvina Belknap. To this union two children were born, Nettie M, who died at the age of 7 years, and Alice M., who resides in Buffalo, New York. He was separated by death from his first wife August 24, 1868. On Feb 16, 1871, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth J. Fletcher, at Paola, Miama (sic) county, Kans. to this union seven children were born, five boys and two girls, all of whom, with a wife and mother, are left to mourn his loss. Early in life he sought Christ as a personal Savior, was baptized and united with the M.E. church and since that time has lived a consistent Christian life. August 17, 1862, he answered the president's call for troops, enlisted in Co. A, 116th New York Volunteer Infantry, and was wounded at the battle of Oppoon Creek [Opequon Creek; military records record he was wounded at the Battle of Winchester, VA., Sept. 19, 1864]. On June 8, 1865, he was honorably discharged and mustered out of the service. He came to Lena Valley March 4, 1872, and has lived here ever since. For several years he has been prominent in political work, a corner stone in the church, and a staunch defender of the right. His last words were as if in answer to a question, as he said, "What? What? Yes, I am ready." His loss will be keenly felt by all in and around the Valley, as he was one of whose advice was seldom wrong. May he have the rest he so well deserves.
