LASH DIES SUNDAY AFTER YEAR’S ILLNESS. Was Prominent in Athens Business, Civic Affairs for 65 Years. Eli Reynolds Lash, age 87, prominent in business, civic affairs, and politics in Athens for 65 years, died Sunday afternoon at four o’clock at his home, 15 S. College St. He had been ill for a year. Mr. Lash was Ohio’s oldest druggist when he retired from business a year ago. He served as Athens postmaster for eight years and had been a trustee of Ohio University since his appointment in 1912 by Governor Harmon. Starting in the drug business in Athens in 1872, Mr. Lash a year later bought the store of John Perkins, who had come here from Boston to start in business in 1838. He continued to operate that business in later years with his son, E. Rey Lash, until his retirement. Born in Alexander Township, Nov. 20, 1848, a son of Jacob and Susan Morrison Lash, Mr. Lash attended Ohio University and was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He was the oldest alumnus of the local chapter. Mr. Lash served two years as a trustee of the Athens State Hospital, being appointed by Governor Campbell in 1891. He ran as a Democratic candidate for Congress against Gen. C. H. Grosvenor in 1894 and was a Democratic presidential elector in 1896 and 1900. He was postmaster in Athens from 1913 to 1921. Mr. Lash organized the Knights of Pythias Lodge here and was the first chancellor commander in 1877. He was a member of the Grand Lodge in 1878, and in 1882 was made a life member. He married Miss Alice Johns, Nov. 18, 1875. She died Dec. 17, 1931. He leaves his son, a daughter, Florence Lash Williams, and a granddaughter, Susan Alice Lash, all of Athens. ONE OF FOUR CHILDREN Mr. Lash was the last of a family of four children. H. M. Lash, a brother, a noted physician and surgeon died in Indianapolis, in 1903. Another brother, W. D. Lash, died in 1909 in Zanesville where he had been superintendent of schools for 37 years. The W. D. Lash High School there is named in his honor. A sister, the late Lydia Lash Evans, was the wife of Dr. D. J. Evans, who was professor of Latin at Ohio University. Funeral services will be conducted at the home, 15 S. College St., Wednesday morning at 10:30 o’clock by Rev. Ewing Walters, pastor of the Albany Baptist Church. Burial will be made in the W. Union St. Cemetery.
