Page 15 Date Wednesday , March 22 1911 Obit for Eli Sutphin State Register Special Service Girard Ill. March 22------ The sad news has been received here by the relatives of the death of Eli Sutphin, an aged and respected citizen of Girard . His death occurred at the home of his son, J.A.L.Sutphin, on March 13 ,in Topeco, Va , To which place he had gone about a year ago for a farewell visit to the scenes of his early childhood days. Near this place in the town of Hylton Va., Eli Sutphin was born on July 16, 1838 being at the time of his decease 72 years 7 Mo and 17 days of age. On November 10 ,1857 he was united in marriage to Sarah A. Martin at Hylton Va. To this union were born twelve children, seven boys and five girls. Two of them, Martha E. and Lona A. ,had preceded Mother and Father to the other shore. In the fall of 1884 he with his family removed to Illinois , where he was since resided . His wife (Sarah ) died here about seven years ago and was interred here in Girard Cemetery. The deceased had been a member of the Brethren or Dunkard Church for about Thirty Five years and was a devoted Christian, A man highly esteemed , and his numerous friends will be grieved to hear of his death. Besides these friends and relatives he leaves ten living children to mourn his departure : William R. Sutphin of Pilot Virginia ., J.A.L. Sutphin of Topeca , Va. , Larkin of Mena ARK. , Mrs. Mary A. Keith of Girard Ill, Mrs. Hulda R. Harris of Girard Ill,. Mrs. Jane Israelson of Vera Cruz MO., Henry and David of Virden , Hines of Vienna Ill., and Hite of Girard Ill. The remains will be laid to rest in the cemetery at Topeco Va. The funeral will be preached at a later date, both at Topeco and here at Girard at the same time and from the same text.
