Some sources say his mother was from the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe near the Canadian border though that is not well documented. The area where he was born was near the Canadian border and within the territory of the Mohawk Tribe. It is also said that he spoke French as well as English. There were many French speaking Canadians who enlisted in the Continental Army. Francois Amable Monty (1736-1809), the grandfather of Maria Monty, Eli Benway's first wife, join a Continental Regiment that formed in Quebec. That may be how the Canadian Benoits became the American Benways. After the war many French speaking veterans settled on bounty land in northern New York and Vermont. Benway enlisted in the 12th Regiment, Company F Vermont Volunteers on Aug. 20, 1862 at age 35; and was discharged Jan. 20, 1863 for disabilities. After his wounds healed he re-enlisted in 11th Regiment, Co. B on July 23,1864. The 11th regiment became the 1st Regiment, Vermont Heavy Artillery The 12th Regiment was engaged at Fairfax Court House, Virginia on Dec. 28,1862 The 11th Regiment was engaged at Charlestown, West Virginia on Aug.21, 1864 Gilbert's Ford, Virginia on Sept. 13, 1864 At the Battle of Opequon (Third Battle of Winchester) on Sept. 19,1864 Eli W. Benway was once again wounded, and mustered out August 25, 1865. Eli and his first three sons all practiced the blacksmith trade. In November 1879 Eli W. Benway filed patent number 221767 Improvement in Riding Harrows and Rollers. He had two partners, Casper M. Rouse and James M. Voss. * Eli Benway's first wife is listed in one publication as Charlotte Monty and Mary Monta in census and other records. She is listed as Mary Maria Monti on the death certificate of another son Henry Charles Benway (1852-1931). October 14, 2011 According to the Vermont Death Records Her name is Mary M. Monty, Monkton, Vermont, age 27, wife of E.W.Benway, and her parents are James and Charlotte Monty. Bio by Michael Ratliff Lutz his great great grandson through his son Henry. Oct 21, 1897: Died Saturday after many weeks suffering from a paralytic stroke, Eli W. Benway. He died at his home south of town in the presence of his three children that are at home, John, Roy and Ida. He lived an eventful life, being a native of Vermont and was with the Green Mountain boys through the Civil War, receiving several wounds For his service he drew $30. a month pension. He was 70y 5m 21d old. Interment was in the cemetery north of town with G.A.R. rites Monday. Mrs. Chas Yearout is a daughter she arrived here Monday night to late to attend her father's funeral.
