I, 58th Massachusetts Infantry The son of Peleg and Lydia (Hayward) Osborne. Eliab enlisted in the army on February 20, 1862 and was mustered that same day as a Private in Co. F of the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry. The July and August 1862 muster roll indicated he was unable to keep up on the march from Manassas to Centreville following the Second Battle of Bull Run and was considered absent without leave. The charge of desertion was removed from his military record when it was learned he was admitted to the hospital at Portsmouth Grove, RI on Sept. 6th. He was discharged on Dec. 5, 1862 at the military hospital at Portsmouth Grove, RI due disability caused by “palpitation of heart.” Eliab married Sarah Roberts Clark, the 24-year-old daughter of Robert and Deborah, at East Bridgewater, MA on February 8, 1864. The couple would have two known children, Ella F., born in 1865, and Nettie L., born in 1867. He enlisted for a second time and was mustered on May 13, 1864 as a Private in Co. I of the 58th Massachusetts Infantry. His regiment was deployed to Washington, arriving in the city at the end of April. Less than a week later they were heavy involved in battle at the Wilderness, where the regiment suffered 6 killed and 32 wounded. Days later they were engaged at Spotsylvania Court House where another 17 were killed, while 83 were wounded. At Bethesda Church fought between June 1st and 3rd they suffered heavily again, losing 24 killed and 83 wounded. The regiment was moved to besiege Petersburg and was involved in the Petersburg mine explosion on July 30th, where 84 from the regiment were taken regiment. The regiment next fought at Poplar Springs Church in September where two more were killed and, after being surrounded, 98 were taken prisoner. Following this action the regiment was reduced to 77 officers and enlisted men. In the spring of 1865 the regiment continued at Petersburg and were at Farmville, VA on April 9, 1865 when Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House. Eliab was mustered out of military service on June 13, 1865. Eliab was a 74-year-old Shoe Operative when he died of Arterio Sclerosis at 920 Main St., Brockton. His wife Sarah died in Easton, MA in 1916.
