Son of Peter Mills and Mary Jane Stanley OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, January 30, 1919 ELIAS MILLS Elias Mills was born in Warren county, Indiana, March 26, 1839, and died at his home near Liberty Center, Warren County, Iowa, Jan. 17, 1919, aged 79 years, 9 months and 21 days. When eight years of age he removed with his parents to Jefferson county, Iowa. Within a year, his mother died, and he was then bound to Joel Paxton, a Quaker, until he was twenty-one years old. In 1861, being of age, he enlisted in the service of the United States and served three years, then re-enlisted and served to the end of the Civil War. He was wounded three times. In 1864, while home on furlough, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Edwards. Eleven children were born of this union: William Henry, of Liberty Center, Iowa; Lucy Elvira Sones, who died Jan. 6, 1899; Charles Levi, who died Sept. 25, 1900; Laura Ellen Gripp, New Virginia, Iowa; Abel Edwards, Liberty Center, Iowa; Norvel Rafe, Nevada, Iowa; Herman Everett, Liberty Center, Iowa; Jessie Irwin, who died Dec. 1, 1918; the three others, Eli, Clarence and Jeannette Isabel, all died in infancy. His wife, Elizabeth, died Nov. 8, 1888. On April 12, 1891, he was again married to Miss Mary J. Breese. To this union were born seven children, three of whom, Thelma, Ronald, and Marguerite, died in infancy. Those surviving are Lowell Lester, Des Moines, Iowa; Zella Marie Lawyer, Indianola, Iowa; Oral Harry, Liberty Center, Iowa; and Raymond Isaac, still at home. Of twenty-eight grandchildren, twenty-four are still living. Of ten great-grandchildren, nine are living. He is also survived by his wife, Mary, and one sister, Mrs. Jane Hart, of Allen, Nebraska. Elias, when a young man, was converted and united with the United Brethren church at Arnold, and afterward transferred his membership to the Ottercreek Christian church near Liberty Center, ever living consistent with his profession. As a Christian and patriot, he was the peer of any of his fellow citizens. He loved his family, his church, and his country as he loved his life and lived up to the full measure of service. In his business, as well as in all of his social relations, he had the esteem and fullest confidence of all who knew him. Though a man with strong force of character and firm in his convictions of right, still he was tolerant and charitable to a fault. He was always willing and free to help any just cause or claim. His last serious illness was for about a week, though he never rallied after the shock from the death of his son Jesse and of his little granddaughter, Darlene. He was conscious to the last and was aware of his approaching end. He called his family to his bedside and gave them affectionate counsel, and told them he was ready to go, and urged them to live that they may meet him in heaven. He planned the arrangements for his funeral, and toward the last he seemed to be looking beyond his loved ones about him and, when asked why, he answered, "I see my Savior." So this good man died with the same triumphant testimony on his lips that we have so often heard him give in the public congregation and wherever else opportunity offered. Funeral services were conducted at 11 o'clock Sunday, at the home of Rev. C. W. Stewart of Indianola, Ia., a former pastor, and interment took place at the Arnold cemetery, where the ritual service of the I.O.O.F. was rendered by the local lodge, of which he had been a member with a clear record ever since his initiation in 1875.
