Description	:	Eli was the son of Edmund and Malinda Huneycutt of the Bloomington Community in Stanly County. He served in the Confederate Army, Co. C, 42nd Reg., NC Troops. The following information was provided by James Forcum via Ancestry.com: "While the story says that Eli Huneycutt and Mary Ann Morton married after the death of his wife, Susannah Whitley Morton, it is incorrect in that Susannah Whitley Morton Huneycutt didn't die during the Civil War in Eli's absence. The following information was provided by James Forcum via Ancestry.com: "While the story says that Eli Huneycutt and Mary Ann Morton married after the death of his wife, Susannah Whitley Morton, it is incorrect in that Susannah Whitley Morton Huneycutt didn't die during the Civil War in Eli's absence. Susannah died in March, 1879, after having 2 children with Eli AFTER the Civil War, Harrison (1867) and Elizabeth Jane (1870) Huneycutt. Eli and Susannah didn't marry until after the Civil War, in 1866, and she was approximately 5 years older than him at that time. Susannah's first husband, John Morton, died in the Civil War; so she was a widow with 4 small children in 1866 when Eli returned from the war (without his leg) and they married. Mary Ann Morton was 10 when Eli and Susannah married, and 22 when her mother died and she married her step-father. They were married barely a month after Susannah died, in April, 1879, and had their first child, a daughter Ada Emeline, 13 months later. A more fair assessment of their relationship was that Eli had 2 small children to raise alone and Mary Ann had few prospects after the Civil War, which was responsible for killing over 40,375 of North Carolina's brave sons. In those days, you married who you knew, and Mary Ann knew her step-father. Most of the eligible young men in their area were killed. Without the prospect of a husband, she certainly couldn't have stayed on the family farm without marrying him. But it did, indeed, keep their family together. In addition to the 9 children she had with Eli, she helped raise her 2 step-children/half-siblings, making for a very interesting family tree."
