Obituary - Elihu J. Wood, another of our old and respected citizens, passed to his reward last Saturday, November 23. Deceased was born in Lexington, Stark county, Ohio. He spent his early life on the family farm. His education was obtained in the country school near his home, then the high school at Alliance, Ohio, and at Mount Union College. In the meantime he taught school in Indiana and Ohio. He graduated from college the closing of the first year of the Civil War. He then enlisted in the service for three years, was mustered out at the expiration of this term, and retained for clerical duties in the government headquarters at Louisville, Kentucky. At this time he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Stewart of Fairview, Iowa, who was a fellow student at Mt. Union college. They came to Iowa, locating in Anamosa in April 1867. Here they lived their life of usefuness ever since. Mr. Wood became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in this city by card, where he was an honored and faithful member until his death. He was much interested in the church of his choice, and was an intelligent member of the same. He knew it's history, kept in touch with it's progress at home and abroad. He sacrificed much for it's success in this community. He has served the church faithfully as superintendent of Sunday school and for many years was a member of the official board. Unless detained by illness, absence from home, or very important business, he was always in his place in the official meetings, the Wednesday prayer service, and the public worship, twice each Sunday. No matter how weary, he would walk up the hill to give aid to the service by his presence and willing services. Mr. Wood assisted in the organization of the Prison Sunday school, and for forty years was a teacher there, many a prisoner has gone out to liberty with good reasons for remembering Col. Wood. Deceased was identified with several Masonic bodies of this city, also with the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic. He has been an important man in the business and civic Life of Anamosa. For 35 years he carried on the clothing business here. He served as postmaster for four years, and for the past few years has carried on an insurance business while serving the community as Justice of the Peace. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon. In addition to 20 members of the Masonic order from this and other towns, and 26 members of the local G. A. R. post army, other citizens of Anamosa and vicinity attended the funeral and paid silent tribute to the memory of the departed and much respected citizen. Rev. Shaffer of the M. E. church delivered the sermon. The Masonic services were then given both at the church and also at the grave at Riverside. The many friends exted sympathy to the wife and daughter left to mourn the loss of the departed one.
