His father joined the rush of the goldseekers to California in 1849, and never returned. Three years later his mother removed with her family, the son and five daughters, to Belvidere, Illinois. From there they came, in 1856, to Butler County where the children grew up. Only one of the members survives, Mrs. Ann Suttle of Escandida, California. November 30, 1862, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Stuart. Soon there after they located near the old homestead in a home they occupied continuously for fifty-three years. Here, in 1912, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Here were born their eight children, of whom six remain: Charles A., Boulder, Colorado; Benjamin H., Swanton, Iowa; William H., Hinckley, Minnesota; George L., Mrs. Libbie Ressler and Mrs. Hattie Turner, Shell Rock. Twenty-one grandchildren are also included in the family group. In March, 1916, he retired from the activities of farming and moved with his wife into Shell Rock, but before they had remained a year in the new home his companion was removed by death. He spent the summer chiefly with his daughter, Mrs. Turner, and in the autumn he sought the more favorable climate of Colorado. Here his death came suddenly from heart disease at the home of his son, Charles. Mr. Jaquis was a valued and respected member of the neighborhood in which he spent the years of his manhood, occupying carious positions of usefulness in it's public affairs from time to time. The sympathy is felt for the members of his family who remain, whose tears were scarcely dried from the loss of the mother of the home when this added sorrow came to them. The remains were brought from Boulder and funeral services were held in the Congregational Church last Friday, conducted by Rev. P. H. Fisk. Interment was made in Riverside."
