Description	:	Elijah D. Heumphreus, World War veteran and resident of this community since boyhood, died suddenly at his home 4 1/2 miles southeast of Hawarden, Monday morning from a heart attack. He became ill early that morning and a physician was summoned and minister to him. Heumphreus, World War veteran and resident of this community since boyhood, died suddenly at his home 4 1/2 miles southeast of Hawarden, Monday morning from a heart attack. He became ill early that morning and a physician was summoned and minister to him. Later he decided to get up for breakfast but complained of feeling cold and sat for a time with his feet in the oven of the kitchen stove while Mrs. Heumphreus was preparing breakfast. Suddenly she turned around toward the stove and noted that he had slumped forward against the reservoir. She thought that he must have fainted but it developed that life had slipped away instantly. A physician was hastily summoned but life was found to be extinct. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in this city at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon with Rev. Robert F. Chapler, the pastor, in charge. Full military honors will be accorded by members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars with interment in Grace Hill cemetery. Elijah Dolphus Heumphreus, son of Seth and Hannah Collier Heumphreus, was born at Coin, Page county, Iowa, September 21, 1891, so was just past 49 years of age at the time of his death. He came to this community with his parents and other members of his family in 1901 at the age of 10 years and has continued to make his home here since that time. During the World War he entered the army on May 28, 1918 and became a member of Battery C, 337th Field Artillery, sailing for France on August 17, 1918 where he served until the end of the war. He arrived back in the United States on January 19, 1919 and was honorably discharged from the service on January 31st of that year. On March 19, 1919, he was united in marriage with Miss Mae Searle at the Associated parsonage in Hawarden. They have farmed continuously in this community since their marriage. For a number of years past he has operated the home farm of his father-in-law, L.H. Searle, in Washington township. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Donald, 17, and Ralph, 16, and one daughter, Colleen, 10 years old. He also leaves two brothers and four sisters, Wesley Heumphreus of College Springs, Iowa; Emmett Heumphreus of Alcester; Mrs. Hiram Hullinger of New Market, Iowa; Mrs. Harry Yates of Shenandoah, Iowa; Mrs. Flora Yates and Mrs. Walter Larson of Hawarden. His parents preceded him in death several years ago. Mr. Heumphreus was widely known in this community. For years he had taken an active part in the affairs of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and his sudden death came as a severe shock not only to the members of his family but to his many friends among the ex-service men in the community as well.
