CIVIL WAR SOLDIER: 1st Regiment, Light Artillery, Mississippi Elijah, son of William McGowan and Esther Jane Tomlinson McGowan, Grandson of Robert McGowan. Elijah's father William, born in Georgia, moved from Georgia to Marion county, in the Mississippi Territory about 1805, before 1810, with his father Robert McGowin (sic -spelling in earliest tax documents). Elijah's father William and his brothers (Elijah's uncles) fought in the war of 1812 in Lt. Col Nixon's Regiment of the Mississippi territorial volunteer militia. William's younger brother Russell, Elijah's uncle, died on active duty during the war of 1812 at the age of 16. War of 1812 Records show where Robert McGowen, Elijah's grandfather, signed for his deceased son's (Russell McGowen) final pay military in Marion County, Mississippi Territory. William later named his first son Russell, a coincidence? After the war, William McGowan, married Esther Jane Tomlinson, daughter of Jacob Tomlinson, granddaughter of John Tomlinson. John Tomlinson was the owner of an impressive estate who distributed some of his wealth to William and Esther prior to his death, early probate court documents found online, Marion county, MS. William's father Robert was also a man of means. Mississippi gained statehood in 1817 and Jackson, in Hinds county, became the capitol of Mississippi which was north of then Marion county. William McGowan, relatives and other prominent citizens (The Bracey's) moved to southern/western Hinds county after the 1830 census. William and family moved to what would later be named the Byram / Elton bottom / Terry area of Hinds county. Hugh McGowen (William's brother, Elijah's uncle) is named in the book titled, "Mississippi History, 1891, Hinds county" pages 483 to 490 which mentions early settlers. It specifically mentions "Hugh McGowan" being an early settler of what later became the "Byram neighborhood". Hugh actually had land interests around Springridge and Raymond. His father-in-law Merry Bracey, purchased a large plantation at Springridge, Hinds county, Mississippi. The book was written many years after it all happened. Hugh and the Bracey's are buried together in the Hugh McGowen / Merry Bracey cemetery near Cooper's wells. William McGowan died intestate in 1846. His estate was probated in Hinds county. The estate was in probate for 4 years at which point William's wife Esther then passed on (Oct 1849 per records at Bethesda Baptist Church) so the final distribution of the estate was done by James E. Mcgowen (Son). The records describe the estate of William as 'generous'. The estate was divided among Williams children. As to what each child received is written in the probate records. Elijah E. McGowen was married to Holly C. Whittington on 10 May 1849. She died about 1860. He remarried to Martha C Tucker abt 1861. He had 4 known children with each wife for a total of 8 known children. Census records show that after 1870 but before 1880 Elija E. McGowen and family with brother Octavius McGowen and family moved to Lapile, Union, Arkansas. It is interesting that they moved before the McGowen's in Hinds county decided to change their spelling of McGowen back to McGowan. Therefore the families in Arkansas spelled it with an 'e' vs an 'a'. Later generations of this family are found spelling it with an 'a'. (Bio by: David B. McGowan J., gg-grandnephew of E.E.
