While Mr. Lewis' death was not unexpected, for he has been ill for many weeks, it was still a shock to many of his neighbors and friends to learn he has gone from us . All of us share with the bereaved children and other relatives in their loss. Mr.Lewis has always been an unselfish citizen and neighbor. Few have lived a more consistent life than he. He was wise and generous in business matters; took a keen delight in wholesome recreation, such as hunting and fishing;was deeply interested in political affairs, both local and national; and throughout all his life was very faithful and loyal to the Methodist church. For many years, and at the time of his death, Mr. Lewis was on the board of trustees of the Leon church, where his wise counsel helped on so many occasions. He also gave generously to all the enterprises of the church. This interest he manifested until the very last. Elijah Haynes Lewis was born in Douglas County Illinois, January 6th 1840. He has never known a father's care for when Mr. Lewis was but 9 months old his father died. He was married to Mary Ann Brann on January 2, 1869. To this union were born four children, Etta, Frank, and Ida, who reside at Leon, Iowa, and Will, of Cainsville Mo., all of whom are still living. The mother died five years ago in May. Mr. Lewis was the last of his family, there having been three brothers and two half-sisters. Perry Chastain, whose mother died when he was but one year old was taken by Mr. Lewis into his home and cared for and raised as one of his own children. Death came to Mr. Lewis last Sunday evening at 6:00 o'clock after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor,Rev. Guy J. Fransher, interment being in the Leon cemetery.
