Description	:	Elijah Jefferson Underwood, an aged and well known resident of this community for sixty years, who closed his earthly pilgrimage at his home Wednesday, June 16, 1937, was born April 17, 1851 in Appanoose County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. Sterling principles of justice and fair play were instilled in his mind in his youth and these characterized him in his dealings through life. September 12, 1872, he and Miss Mary Elizabeth Baldrige were united in marriage in Unionville, Ia. this happy union continued through sixty-four years. Read More	Elijah Jefferson Underwood, an aged and well known resident of this community for sixty years, who closed his earthly pilgrimage at his home Wednesday, June 16, 1937, was born April 17, 1851 in Appanoose County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. Sterling principles of justice and fair play were instilled in his mind in his youth and these characterized him in his dealings through life. September 12, 1872, he and Miss Mary Elizabeth Baldrige were united in marriage in Unionville, Ia. this happy union continued through sixty-four years. This is truly noteworthy as to only a few couples is this rare privilege granted. they observed their fiftieth anniversary years ago with their children, and friends, and in spite of advanced years have been in fair health, living a simple, serene life. To this union seven children were born. One daughter, Mamie, died in infancy, and one son, Frank, died in October 1918. Besides Mrs. Underwood, the departed is survived by three sons, Fred, Edward and George; two daughters, Mrs. Julian Peterson and Mrs Hugh Wilson, all living near the home community; twenty-one grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; one brother in Colorado and one sister in Missouri. Mr. Underwood was a farmer during his lifetime, and herein he succeeded. he, during more than half a century, beheld changes in the community in which a wilderness was changed into a great garden spot. Through work and thrift he took an active part in the transformation. He was a pioneer who came through the sod house age and by the sweat of his brow, he made a living. He was a good man, honored and respected by all. He reached the age of 86 years, 1 months and 29 days. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, June 18, at the home and later at the Methodist Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Samuel Beechner. Burial was in the Exeter Cemetery.
