Gazette - Knowing that you have no correspondent in the locality above indicated and supposing that you desire to keep pace with the march of events, the writer ventures to send an account of a very pleasant occurrence that transpired in this vicinity. On yesterday morning the roads leading to the home of Mr. Elijah Lucas were thronged with people bearing baskets of provisions, all intent upon surprising this family by giving them an unexpected party; and just as the sun's bright beams were gilding the banks and waters of Rocky Fork, the van-guard of the surprisers arrived at the residence, and at 11 A.M. it contained a happy company of gay and festive people, resolved to devote the day to life's best enjoyments, by forgetting its disappointments and its shadows and remembering only its joys and its sunshine. This entertainment was given in honor of Mr. Lucas' fifty-eighth birthday and in token of the high regard of which he and his family are held by those who have known them so long and so well. Mr. Lucas has lived in this neighborhood during his whole life. He has always been right here; at all times ready to reciprocate the offices of kindred; a genial and generous companion, and in friendship like the North star that "shines on forever," steadfast, true and tried. At 1 P.M. the board was spread by fair and willing hands, laden with all things desirable. The guests, to the number of forty-five, were then seated. All partook of the good things before them with keen relish and high enjoyment, and all vied with each other in contributing to the happiness of the occasion. The banquet was simply faultless, both in the method of its service and artistic display, and all arose from it pleased, delighted and satisfied. The repast being over the company repaired to the parlor, and amid mirth, music and the pleasures of conversation the hours passed swiftly by and at 4 P.M. the guests with light hearts and kind words for all departed for their homes feeling that the day spent with neighbor Lucas and his amiable family would be remembered as one of the sunniest in all life's calendar.
