Victim is Alive But Still Unconscious. On Saturday afternoon Lydia, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Wiley met with a most terrible accident which it is feared will cause her death. She was at home from her school teaching and was helping her mother with the fall house-cleaning. They were taking up a carpet and were burning the old papers on which the carpet had been laid. Mrs. Wiley was burning the papers in the stove but the daughter thought they would burn more quickly out of doors. She took an armful into the yard and lighted them. Almost as she did so the wind blew the blazing paper against her, her skirts caught fire and she was fearfully burned to the hips. Help was close at hand and the blaze extinguished. The skin and flesh adhered to her clothes and stockings when they were removed. Ever since the accident Miss Wiley has been mercifully unconscious and while she is still alive there is but little hope of recovery. Miss Wiley has been a bright and helpful daughter and everyone sympathizes deeply with her and with her parents in this awful calamity which has befallen them. The Denison Review, 17 October 1902, page 5 ------------------ OBITUARY, Denison Bulletin, 16 October 1902, page 8: Miss Lydia Wiley, who was so badly burned October 4, 1902, died from the effects of the accident October 10th. The burial took place at Defiance Sunday. Lydia was a young woman of great promise and her death came as a shock to her many friends as well as relatives. Her parents and family have the sincere sympathy of their hosts of friends.
