Ostrander, beloved wife of the venerable Dr. N. Ostrander. After years of illness Mrs. Ostrander departed this life at 10 o'clock yesterday forenoon. Mrs. Ostrander was peculiarly afflicted. About 17 years ago she was stricken with paralysis, but from this she partially recovered. Again about five years ago she suffered a second stroke and this left her health impaired. A year ago last August she suffered a third stroke and from this she never recovered. Ever since she had been a helpless victim to the dread paralysis. She was bed-ridden to the time of her death and during all that time her life was prolonged only by methods out of the ordinary. Physicians have resorted to such extremes to keep the vital spark alive in this year and a half that their successful efforts may well be classed as one of the wonders of medical science. Eliza Jane Yantis was born near Lexington, Kentucky, on April 9, 1819. Her parents were of Dutch descent. On April 11, 1838, she was united in marriage to Nathaniel Ostrander. In 1845 the couple removed to Cass county Missouri, where they engaged in farming and where Dr. Ostrander studied medicine. Dr. and Mrs. Ostrander in 1847 moved to Saline county in the same state. In 1850 Dr. Ostrander came to the golden Pacific coast, and in 1851 he returned east to bring his wife and family west with him. Everything they owned they converted into cash and a prairie outfit of three wagons and an ox team. In 1852 they commenced the journey westward accompanied by Dr. Ostrander's father and directed their eyes toward what is now Washington. The long journey across the plains was most eventful for these hardy immigrants. They lost one child and another was born on the trip. They suffered the usual hardships of the immigrants of those days and in the latter part of 1852 they arrived at the end of their long journey. Dr. Ostrander and his wife took up a donation claim on the Cowlitz river in the then Oregon territory and were among the very first settlers in that valley. The doctor engaged in farming and the practice of medicine until 1872, when the family moved to Tumwater. It is said of Dr. and Mrs. Ostrander that they reclaimed two farms from nature's wilds and a creek and village now bear the family name. They remained at Tumwater until 1879 when the family moved into the home in which Mrs. Ostrander passed from earth. During her long career Mrs. Ostrander was a devout adherent of the Presbyterian faith. She was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom survive her: Mrs. C. B. Montague of Lebanon Oregon; Mrs. Thomas Roe, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Mrs. Charles Catlin, Tacoma; Mrs. M. O'Connor, Mrs. E. H. Easterley (Eastman), Mrs. Walter Crosby and Mrs. C. M. Moore, of this city and John Y. Ostrander now at Dawson City. Mrs. Ostrander had two brothers who were well known pioneers of this county; Judge B. F. Yantis and A. S. Yantis. The funeral will be held on Sunday and the hour will be announced in tomorrow's paper.
