Stein. -------------- Eliza (Kendall) Hurst arrived in New Orleans on May 29, 1852, coming from England with her three sons, 5 year old Alfred, 3 year old William and infant Abraham. They probably arrived in Davenport, Iowa in June. Eliza's husband Abraham Hurst had come to Davenport the preceding year and found work as a brick layer. The family reunion was short, because within a few months both Eliza's husband Abraham and infant son Abraham had died of cholera. Eliza's brother Richard Kendall was probably living in Davenport then, but she must have been shocked at the sudden change in her situation, a widow with two small boys, in a new country. On November 16, 1852 Eliza wed Charles F. Stein, a German immigrant. They were married in Davenport by a justice of the peace. Charles was also a brick maker, so perhaps Charles and Eliza's husband Abraham had known each other. Charles and Eliza, and her two sons Alfred and William, settled in the Village of East Davenport, where Charles had a brick yard and by 1868 a quarry. Both of Eliza's sons fought in the Civil War then returned to Davenport while they worked as steam boatmen. Alfred learned the stone and brick mason trades. William worked as a painter and then went to a business college. In 1870 Charles and Alfred started a lime kiln in Jackson County, with Charles providing the financing. Lime was used for the mortar in brick and stone masonry. The business was initially named Hurst, Stein & Co, but later became A. Hurst & Co. William joined as manager, and a company town named Hurstville grew up around the kilns. The lime works was an extensive and successful enterprise for decades, said to be the largest of its kind west of Chicago. Charles and Eliza continued to spend time in both Davenport and Hurstville. After Eliza's death, Charles continued to live in Jackson County, splitting his time between his two stepsons' homes. Charles died September 20, 1899. His will stated that he wished to be buried with his brother in Scott County.
