The funeral service was held Monday at two o'clock in the afternoon in the United Presbyterian Church in this place conducted by Rev. A. S. Bailey. Interment was in the Ainsworth Cemetery. Mrs. Matthews' maiden name was Eliza Oram. She was a daughter of James and Prudence Oram and was born near Canonsburg, Washington County, Pa., May 23, 1825. She was therefore, in her eight-first year at the time of her death. She spent her early life in Washington County, Pa., receiving her education there and was united in marriage there to Samuel Matthews, Oct. 18, 1854. They lived in Indiana County, Pa., until the spring of 1855 when they moved to Iowa and to this county and settled on a farm three miles n. w. of Ainsworth. This was their home until eight years ago, when they moved to Ainsworth, and have resided there since. Mrs. Matthews is survived by her husband, two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Burnside, of Washington, PA., Mrs. Martha Telford, widow of Rev. J. C. Telford, of Indiana, Pa., and five children, as follows: James O. and Wm. M. Matthews, of near Ainsworth; John T. Matthews, of Washington; Samuel A. Matthews, of Chicago, and Mrs. Jennie Acheson, wife of Rev. J. M. Acheson, of Savannah, Ill. One child, a daughter, Janet, died in infancy. Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Untied Presbyterian Church, a life member. She was a Christian woman whose faith was in evidence every day and every hour of her liife. If there was one womanly characteristic which outshone others in her makeup its was her love for her home and her children. Her whole life seemed wrapped up in them and their happiness, their comfort, their joys, and their sorrows were hers. Not a year passed that did not see all the living children of the good woman at her home to see her. They were all with her last Christmas and all were with her at the time of her death. This community has always appreciated the fine qualities that distinguished Mrs. Matthews as a Christian woman and a mother, and they extend their sympathy to the bereaved friends in their hour of sorrow.
