Her parents were Matt and Elizabeth (Kenkel) Schram of Defiance, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, where she also attended country school. On February 13, 1950, Betty was united in marriage to Ivo Gaul at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. They became parents to two children: Judith and Dean. Betty and Ivo farmed for fifty years on the family farm three miles east of Earling. While Ivo farmed, raised cattle and hogs, and milked cows, Betty raised chickens and sold eggs to many neighbors, friends, the local grocery store, and the nursing home in Earling. She also had a large garden and did lots of canning. They were lifetime members of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, and Betty was known for praying her “old faithful” rosary several times a day. Betty enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to play Bingo and pick eggs; and her and Ivo often visited local casinos where Betty would often be the jackpot winner at the nickel slots. Betty was known for telling lots of stories, remembering everyone’s family lineage, and never forgetting to mail a birthday or anniversary card. After Ivo’s death in May of 2000, Betty continued to live on the farm until she moved to Elm Crest Retirement Community in 2003. The strong memory Betty was known for began to fade three years ago, but she never lost the power of prayer. She remained the kind and pleasant person she always was despite her illness and she prayed every day of her life. She died on Thursday, January 28, 2016 having attained the age of eighty-nine years, one month, and fifteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Matt and Elizabeth, brothers, Leroy and Alvin Schram, and her husband of fifty years, Ivo. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
