Description	:	Obituary March 14, 1919 "Mrs. Joseph Bouchie, formerly Miss Elizabeth Currier, was born August 3, 1855, in the state of New York and died at De Smet, South Dakota, at 1:30 a.m. March 5, 1919, aged sixty-five years, seven months and two days. - In early life she came to Grundy county, Iowa. Here on October 5, 1871, she became the wife of Joseph Bouchie. To this union eleven children were born, eight of whom survive her. The are: Mrs. Fannie Leland, Castlewood; Mrs. Alma E. Parsons, Erwin; Mrs. Cora Holt, Turlock; Earl Bouchie, Agar; Mars. Mabel Watson, Canistota; Mrs. Lena Jepson, Wilmot; Laura Bouchie, Salem; and Mrs. Tina Chaon, Emetsburg, Iowa. Clarence and Mrs. Florence Otis died a few years ago, also a child a few days old. Besides the children who survive her there are many grandchildren and friends to mourn her loss. - Mrs. Bouchie spent about ten years of her married life on a farm in Iowa and two years in Nebraska. She came to South Dakota in 1882, making her home ten miles south of De Smet. In 1902 she came to this city, where she has lived since. Earlier in life she was a member of the Evangelical church in De Smet, but some years ago she joined the Congregational church and has lived an earnest and exemplary Christian life. - Except Earl and Cora, Mrs. Holt, all of the children were present at their mother's death and did all they could to aid and comfort her in the last days. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Thursday afternoon, Rev. J.D. Whitelaw officiating. Interment was in the De Smet cemetery." Three of Elizabeth's children were the real life models for the characters of the Brewster children in the book "These Happy Golden Years" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Elizabeth's step-son Isaac Bouchie was the model for the character Clarence Brewster and her children Clarence and Fannie Ruth were the models for the characters Tommy and Ruby Brewster. All three children were Laura's students when she taught at the Bouchie school in 1883-1884. A few months after the term at Bouchie School ended, Elizabeth's step-son Isaac and her son Clarence quarreled, and Clarence threw a bone that hit Isaac in the face. Isaac got tetanus from the cut in his cheek and died two weeks later as a result of the injury. Isaac's stepmother Elizabeth Bouchie was legally implicated in the criminal trial that followed, because she was egging the fight on. Clarence and Elizabeth were both convicted of manslaughter in 1887. Elizabeth was fined $200 instead of being sent to jail because she was pregnant. Clarence was sentenced to six months in jail, but he was released early for good behavior.
