Slater on December 25, 1881, at Denver, Colorado, and passed away after a long illness at the Coleman Nursing Home in Burwell, Nebraska, on December 29, 1953, at the age of 72 years and 4 days. She came to Nebraska at the age of 18 and was united in marriage to Harvey E. Leach in February, 1901. To this union, five children were born, Hubart Al., and Rulan E., of Burwell, Leland H., of Arcadia, Willard C., who preceded her in death in 1930, and Mrs. Louise Hiser of Burwell. She spent most of her married life on the farm near Arcadia and retired with Mr. Leach in 1929 to do some traveling. Mr. Leach passed away in 1934 and much of her time after his death was spent in California. She came to Burwell in 1946 to make her home with the children. She suffered a stroke in 1950 and fell and broke her hip in August 1952, and has been bedfast since. She was baptized into the First Baptist church of Long Beach, California, July 6, 1937. She had always been a firm believer of the bible. She was a kind and loving wife and mother. Her big aim in life was to do for others. A great share of her life was spent nursing and caring for the sick, often leaving her own work to do so. She leaves to mourn her passing, besides her children, 3 daughters-in-law and one son-in-law; two step daughters, Alice and Minnie of Oakland, Oregon; two step-sons, Bert of Ainsworth of Ervin of Lewellen; two brothers, John Slater of Lancaster, California and Biss Slater of El Paso, Texas; 22 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
