Loved by ALL Mrs. Garland was popularly known as "Aunt Libby" to her host of friends. Born in New York state, she came to Union Pier with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Snyder, shortly after the close of the Civil war. She married Peter Garland in a log cabin In 1875. Mr. Garland passed away 30 years ago. Surviving are a younger sister, Mrs. Almon Tofflemeir. Three Oaks, two daughters, Mrs. William Hankey and Mrs. Catherine Watson both of Union Pier, seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. Here Before Railway Many changes have come about in Union Pier since "Aunt Libby” first settled here. She came to this section before the railroad, long since abandoned, was built, and was fond of relating how she and neighbor children played along the right-of-way while the road-bed for the railroad was being graded. Mrs. Garland had lived in Union Pier for more than 49 years. Fed the Hungry It was legend in Union Pier that every tramp passing through made it a point to stop at the Garland home and ask for food. None went away hungry. Two of her granddaughters, Bernice and Beatrice Hankey, were particular favorites of Mrs. Garland's, and often spent the night with her. Many were the stories told about early days by "Aunt Libby", who related how the first school in Union Pier was a crude frame building, and how the pupils drank from the old dipper at the pump, and swapped slate cloths. Blessed with a remarkable memory for detail, "Aunt Libby" recalled the old-fashioned picnics which were the main pastime in her younger days. Biggest of the picnics were those of the "Anti-Horse Thief" association, a protective organization of farmers to prevent the theft of their livestock. "Aunt Libby" was a friend to the entire community and a valued local historian. Her passing is mourned by many.” From The Herald-Press, October 22, 1942, page 2
