Description	:	Elizabeth "Betsey" Robinson, dau. of Capt. Abner Robinson and Mehitable Palmer, b. of record Aug. 6, 1774 at Windham, Conn. She d. Mar. 24, 1858 in that part of the Town of Windham that became in 1857 the separate Town of Scotland, Conn. On Aug. 5, 1800 of record at Windham, Conn., she as "Betsey" Robinson m. Gamaliel Bingham, s. of Jeremiah Bingham and Esther Palmer, b. May 17, 1775 at Windham, Conn. He d. testate Dec. 30, 1860 in that part of the Town of Windham now the Town of Scotland, Conn. They had eight children recorded at Windham: George, Lois, Calista, Egbert, Warren, Mary, Elizabeth, and Almantha. Gamaliel Bingham wrote his will at Windham on May 18, 1848, in which wife Betsey was still living. However, he did not die at present-day Scotland, Conn. until 12 years later and never changed his will. Whereas Gamaliel has an extant gravestone, wife Betsey also had a gravestone three spaces from her husband, but by the 1930s had become "partially destroyed and only the first name of Betsey was discernable due to the root system of a large pine tree." The Hale inventory of the Old Scotland Cemetery includes the following notation: • Betsey ?, possibly wife of Josiah Manning, stone covered by roots of large pine tree. Fortunately, my favorite Conn. photo volunteer found Betsey's gravestone face down and readable when turned over, confirming she was the wife of Gamaliel Bingham, not as suggested in the Hale database.
