Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer on 5 Apr 1855 p3: "DEATHS---In Foxcroft, March 26, Mrs. Betsey Spaulding, aged 88, relict of the late John Spaulding, of Foxcroft. Mrs. Spaulding, with her husband came to Foxcroft in 1805, fifty years ago, when the town was a mere wilderness, and was the first white woman in the place. She underwent many hardships and privations in assisting her husband to prepare a home. She has of late resided with her daughter, Mrs. J. Berce, from whom she received every attention which her great age required. Mrs. Spaulding lost her faculties in a great measure until a short time previous to her death, when she seemed to revive as from sleep, and to realize that her end was near. She talked calmly of death; called it home, and said 'she had staid long enough and was willing to go; that she had lived a long life and tried to be useful in the world.' Thus she calmly fell asleep to awake as we believe in a better world. She leaves a large number of relatives and friends to mourn their loss, which is her gain."
