Elizabeth Oberlander was born January 26, 1922, at the Oberlander family homestead, Tepee Butte, ND, the daughter of Fred and Caroline Oberlander. The tenth of thirteen children, she was raised on the family farm surrounded by a large loving family. She attended Tepee Butte School, near her home, along with siblings and neighbors. Following school, she spent several years loving and caring for many of her nieces and nephews, and helping her older siblings with their farm labor. She met her future husband, Lowell Ruggles, at a dance in and they were married February 18, 1943, at Wibaux, MO. Lowell had enlisted in the U.S. Army and left for service February 26, 1943. Betty travelled to Louisiana to be with Lowell during his advanced training before he was deployed to Guadalcanal where he served for the duration of WWII. While he was away, Roger, their first son, was born and Betty lived with Roger, her sister Elsie, and Elsie’s daughter Glenda in an apartment in New England. Betty worked at the Red and White Grocery store and Elsie babysat for the two children until Lowell returned in 1945. They farmed in Slope County for the next 14 years. During that time, David, Kevin, and Evonne were born. In 1959, the family moved to the present Ruggles farm in Scranton, ND. Kraig, Betty and Lowell’s youngest son was born the next year. In 1980, Lowell and Betty moved to Scranton, where she has resided until her death. Betty was the active and beloved center of her family for 70 years! She was a favorite among her 12 siblings and deeply loved by her children, daughters-in-law, 14 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. She was known for her hospitality; everyone, family as well as friends, always felt welcome and were comfortable visiting at any time. They would always be met with a delicious meal that “Betty”, “Mom”, or later most commonly, “Granny Betty” would whip up in a few minutes and no one ever left hungry. The great food was always accompanied by a warm smile and hugs. She was also a pillar of the Scranton community, and in recent years, it seemed that the more she pledged to stop making pies for the senior citizens center and various church and community events, the more the demand increased and she just kept baking. She was active in homemaker’s club, volley ball, bowling and later in senior citizen’s, church circle, and multiple other community endeavors. Her Christian faith, along with her family, was at her center of her and helped her transgress many difficult times with inspiring grace. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, David and Kraig Ruggles, one daughter-in-law, Sherry Lynn Ruggles, 8 siblings; Pauline Schwartz, Fred Oberlander, Rose Hoeffer, Adam Oberlander, Ida Sprecher, Bennie Oberlander, Elsie Johnson, and Edward Oberlander. Survivors include one daughter, Evonne Ruggles; two sons and 6 daughters-in-law, Roger and Kari Ruggles, Kevin and Sharon Ruggles, Betty Ruggles, Alayne Van Erem, and Sherry Ruggles; three sisters, Tillie Rosenow, Helen Green , Lorraine Bruckner, and one brother Harry Oberlander; 14 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.
