Description	:	Elizabeth Channel was the daughter of William Channel (1781-1846) and Phebe Hand (1774-1861.) Elizabeth was born October 5, 1802 in Port Elizabeth, Cumberland County, New Jersey and died October 16, 1863 in Port Elizabeth at the age of 60. The Sheppard homestead Elizabeth and Jonathan created was a small home consisting of 2 rooms and a cook shed downstairs and had an “A” roof which was divided into 2 rooms upstairs. Read More	Elizabeth Channel was the daughter of William Channel (1781-1846) and Phebe Hand (1774-1861.) Elizabeth was born October 5, 1802 in Port Elizabeth, Cumberland County, New Jersey and died October 16, 1863 in Port Elizabeth at the age of 60. The Sheppard homestead Elizabeth and Jonathan created was a small home consisting of 2 rooms and a cook shed downstairs and had an “A” roof which was divided into 2 rooms upstairs. A very narrow winding stairway led to the so called 2nd floor. In front of the house which set back only about 15 feet from the Stage Road were several large maple trees. A picket fence (neatly whitewashed) stood in front of the house. An open well was at the rear and at the south end of the house. The grounds consisted of about 2 acres of upland and 2 acres of meadows. It was here that Elizabeth and her husband raised 9 sons and 3 daughters. At least seven of her sons registered in the military during the Civil War, five of them served. William died in action and John died after being held in Andersonville Prison. Another son later married a woman who had served as a nurse. (Written by Daniel Sheppard, great-grandson, in 1964)
