Elizabeth, who was born on 20 June 1767 in York County, Pennsylvania, was the daughter of John Clark and Mary Campbell. Although the actual date of their marriage has not been determined, it is believed to have taken place around 1783. This date is primarily based upon the stated age of their eldest son, William, when he died in 1847. Although James may have been associated with the Quakers prior to his marriage, the earliest Quaker record that has been found which pertains to him was in the minutes of the Bush River Monthly Meeting of Friends in Newberry County, South Carolina. It was dated 26 April 1788, and stated that he was "received by request." James and Elizabeth were later united with the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, however, in what is now Union County, South Carolina. In the minutes of this Meeting, dated 24 August 1805, was found the following: "James Benson and family given certificate to Miami Monthly Meeting, Ohio." Like many of the Quakers living in the Carolinas and Virginia, James and Elizabeth moved to Ohio after it had become a state in 1803. One of the main drawing points of Ohio was that it had been granted statehood as a "free state," and many southern Quakers were anti-slavery. Whether the Benson's were anti-slavery Quakers, or whether they were simply looking to settle on new land, is not known, however. The Benson's were subsequently received at the Miami Monthly Meeting on 14 November 1805, and soon took up land along the Little Miami River in Greene County. In 1810 a new meeting was established as an offshoot of the Miami Monthly Meeting. It was called Caesar's Creek Monthly Meeting, and was located just over the line in what is now Clinton County, Ohio. The minutes of the Caesar's Creek Monthly Meeting show that three of James and Elizabeth's children were married there. The Benson's were listed in the Ohio census records as living in Sugar Creek Township in Greene County, and it appears that they remained there until James' death in 1829, or early 1830. Prior to his death, James deeded nearly all of his land holdings to his children. They in turn deeded these lands to John Benson after James' death. John Benson was the youngest child of James and Elizabeth, and most of the older children had already moved to Indiana. On 27 January 1831, James' widow, Elizabeth, was granted a certificate to the Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting at Lynn in Randolph County, Indiana to be near several of her children who had previously moved there.
