Read More	The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson Co., KS Thursday, July 30, 1914 Fatal Grade Crossing Accident At 4:35 Sunday afternoon a frightful grade crossing accident occurred at the village of Birmingham on the Missouri Pacific railway 18 miles west of Valley Falls, when a motor cycle carrying two well known and favorite young people plunged against the tender of a passing freight train. The mangled and bleeding bodies of Lizzie Ratz and Albert Leutert were picked up from the middle of the road way. Miss Lizzie Ratz, unconscious was taken to the home of Mrs. Dutt; and her companion was taken to another house across the street. In a twinkling their happiness and pleasure had been changed to suffering, sorrow and---death. Then began the call for surgeons and help. Dr. Darlington of Denison was the first. And Doctor Smith from Holton arrived. But more medical assistance was needed. Lizzie was dangerously injured and continued unconscious. Her jaws were broken and neck injured. Albert was seriously hurt, his shoulder broken, his jaw cracked, and the skull over the left eye, fractured. For more than an hour no doctor could be found in Valley Falls where the physicians of the families resided, all being out of town except Dr. Lowry who was calling on his city patients. His first notice me in a telegram from Supt. Cahill at Kansas City to go and attend the injured. It was six o'clock before he got started on the way to the scene of the tragedy in Elmer Lewes' car. Dr. M.F. Marks, who came in from his farm, followed shortly afterwards. LEWIS made the drive in 34 minutes. Will Mitchell with Fred Legler, a cousin of Miss Ratz, and Mrs. Lowry was soon on the way in his car. Wilson in Mort Burris' car had taken the lead going to the Leutert and Anderson homes first for the girls. He drove to Birmingham in 30 minutes. Ad Hull went along with Dr. Lowry and in less than three quarters of an hour was telephoning a confirmation of the worst news, that Miss Ratz could not survive and that Albert was dangerously hurt. Dr. J.M. Marks who was in Topeka that afternoon reached Birmingham at 10:00 o'clock and remained all night watching at the bedside of Miss Lizzie, lying unconscious like one paralyzed. Albert LEUTERT was able taken home in Dr. M.F. Marks car that night. Then it was thought that he would recover but there were no hopes for Miss Ratz. On his motor cycle that Sunday afternoon, Albert Leutert and his affianced, Miss Lizzie Ratz, in company with Alba Anderson and his girl, Miss Ruth Copas, on another motor cycle, concluded to take a pleasure ride across country and merrily they rode away from the Halfmound neighborhood. Nearing Birmingham, Albert and Lizzie were in the lead down the hill and across a small, but rough boarded bridge; then up a slight grade to the railroad crossing when the engine from behind some box cars and a building, suddenly appeared in their path. The trainmen, so helpless to prevent, breathlessly watched the double tragedy. They do not think that Albert saw the train except at the last moment. He says he saw the engine only 15 feet away, but too late. But the engineer and fireman thought Lizzie did see them, for a brief second. She made a slight effort as if to get off the machine it seemed. They did not think Albert was much hurt at first as he got up and walked away, not knowing what he was doing probably. Their companions behind them saw the train coming and cried to them to lookout! But they heard or heeded not the warning! The crash came on! A beautiful life went out and there was mourning in the several homes in the valley by the Half Mound. The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson Co., KS Thursday, July 30, 1914 Died. Lizzie Ratz, without regaining consciousness, died at the Dutt home in Birmingham, Tuesday evening, at five o'clock. The embalmed body was removed to the home of her father that night. Lizzie was the fourth daughter of Andy Ratz and was born on the old farm 18 years ago, May 31st, last. She is survived by her father and five sisters, Mrs. Guy Blazer of Manzanalla, Colo., Mrs. Frank Walker of Valley Falls, Sylvia, Hattie and Inez at home, and three brothers, Fred, Harold, and Carol also at home. The funeral was held from the Coal Creek church this Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Peek conducting the services. The burial was in the Farrar cemetery by the side of her mother who died three years ago. The bereaved family has the sympathy of many friends.
