She was born Apr 13, 1917, to Edwin Ellsworth and Elizabeth (Neely) Evans on a family farm east of Watertown. She attended local schools and graduated from Watertown High School in 1935. She was active in 4-H and a member of the WHS senior orchestra for six years. She held... Read More	Elizabeth E "Betty" Hawkinson, Watertown, died Apr 22, 2011, in a care center at Watertown. She was born Apr 13, 1917, to Edwin Ellsworth and Elizabeth (Neely) Evans on a family farm east of Watertown. She attended local schools and graduated from Watertown High School in 1935. She was active in 4-H and a member of the WHS senior orchestra for six years. She was voted most popular farm girl in the national contest sponsored by Blue Valley Creamery, which she won two years in a row. Sep 6, 1941, she married Orville F Nielsen at Prairie du Chien, WI. She held various job positions while her husband was in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the war in the Pacific Theatre. After the war, they farmed near Hayti, where she was a secretary to the state's attorney and later assistant cashier at the local bank. She served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary Cook-Olsen Post 17 in Hayti. She was a leader of the family circle at East Norden Lutheran Church for four years. She also helped organize Sunday school, served as superintendent and taught classes. In 1956, they moved to Waco, TX where she was employed at the VAH Psychiatric Hospital for five years, where she was a member of the Hospital Advisory Board. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and was active in the women's organizations. She held all offices in the Heart of Texas Toastmistress International and was a member of the Board in 1963. From 1961 through 1965, she was a debate judge for Waco High School and Baylor University Invitational Debate Tournaments and a member of the Speaker's Bureau. She attended Baylor University and received her CPS Certificate at the University of Texas. In 1965, they moved to California where she worked as a legal secretary for a law firm in Sacramento. Later they were transferred to Mather Air Force Base, where she was secretary to the chief of chaplains. After Orville's retirement from the military, she took an early retirement working for a few months for an attorney in Rancho Cordova and later the couple returned to South Dakota settling on a farm near Hayti. She was active in the Hayti Lutheran Church. Orville died Jun 6, 1981. In 1985, she moved to Watertown. She was chairman of the City Nutrition Board and acted briefly as secretary of the Senior Citizens and was a teacher's assistant in the Watertown schools. She married Edwin Hawkinson Jun 18, 1988, in the Grace Lutheran Church at Watertown. They enjoyed being members of the Senior Citizens, where they were involved in the activities. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Literacy Council and Senior Citizens. She enjoyed the outdoors, flower gardening, bird watching and her dogs. Survivors include her husband, Ed Hawkinson.
