Peter and Rachel married in Sept 1834 in Pennsylvania. Both are buried in Linden Cemetery, Linden, Guthrie, Iowa. Elizabeth Jane France was born Sept 5 1839. Died August 6 1897. Elizabeth Jane Harvey was born in Chester Co, PA and spent the first nine years of her life in that state. In the year 1848, she with her parents moved to the state of OH, locating on the Maumee river near the town of Toledo. About the year 1851 they moved to IA and located on the Des Moines River and lived there several years but afterward located near Redfield, in Dallas Co IA. In 1858, March 7, she was united in marriage with James France in the town of Panora, Guthrie Co IA. About the year 1861 she with her husband located on what is familiarly known as the old France farm, in Seely township. They lived there until the spring of 1888 when they moved to Guthrie Center, where they spent the remaider of their lives. To this union ten children were born, seven daughters and three sons. The husband and 2 daughters preceded the wife and mother to the silent tomb. Her father, two sisters and one brother are still living. They were all present except the father, at the funeral services, who are left behind to mourn the loss of a kind and loving daughter and sister; and children a kind and loving mother. Her affliction commenced last November but she did not give up until the last. She bore her afflictions with fortitude and patience. She was so resolute that no one who saw her thought her so near the end of life's journey until the afternoon of the day before she died when she was attacted with sinking spells. The friends wished to know of her if she wished a minister or doctor, her reply was; she had no use for either. You know I have not changed my mind. In life she was what might be called a free-thinker (defined by Webster as one who doubts or denies religious dogma) She believed there was more virtue in doing good than long prayers. She believed the way to obtain religion was to live right. She had no faith in that class of people who claim to be God's agents to bestow his blessings. There was no superstition in her makeup, preferred to be honest in her own convictions than to practice deceit before the world. She was a good neighbor, a kind mother, and a friend to the poor and unfortunate. Her last request was "Tell Father I have not changed my mind, this is the happiest moment of my life." What more need be said of anyone that passes away from earth. Her mission is ended here. To the family, you have no cause to grieve for the future of your dear parents: the natural law has closed the gate to further knowledge of them. Let their virtues and goodness be your guiding line through life: emulate their virtues and leave them with your children as a legacy worthily bestowed as a lasting memorial of you.
