Schaidt, 85, widow of John F. Schaidt, who for a quarter of a century was county surveyor. For fifty-four years, Mrs Schaidt had resided at 14 Decatur St where services were conducted by Rev D Hixon Bowersox, pastor of St Paul's Lutheran Church, in which she had been active all her life. Schaidt, 85, widow of John F. Schaidt, who for a quarter of a century was county surveyor. Mrs Schaidt was born in Baltimore, a daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Wiegand) Knatz, who were natives of Germany. Her parents moved to Lonaconing when she was a mere child. When boot and shoe making were an art, Mr Kantz(sic) successfully plied his trade. He could fashion the finest grade of shoes for women. Her husband, John F. Schaidt, finished school in 1875, first attending Lexington University, Lexington, Ky. and Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., graduating in civil engineering. Mrs and Mrs. Schaidt came to Cumberland from Lonaconing following their marriage in 1876. Mr. Schaidt worked in the coal mines during vacation periods that he might meet his college tuition. He was a brother of the late Henry W. .Schaidt, who was editor of the old Lonaconing Review arid later became manager of the Cumberland Dally News. John F. Schaidt, who died in 1904, was active In Republican politics for many years. During his career as county surveyor he was elected a number of times on the Republican ticket without opposition. Mrs Schaidt's survivors include five sons and one daughter Mrs R O. Christopher, Romney, W. Va. A son, John F, lived with his mother and she was especially proud of his record in the United States Navy during the World War, he having made fourteen round trips across the Atlantic. The other sons are Charles F, Pittsburgh, and Leander, Henry W, and Mortimer C. Schaidt, this city and five great grandchildren. The pallbearers were Carl L. Leonard, Thomas E. Gilchrist, Joseph Klawan, George A. Siebert, Lester S. Teter and Perry A Nikkei. Among the groups that sent floral tributes were the Order of DeMolay, the local office of the Maryland Unemployment Compensation of which her son Leander, is manager, employes of the Cumberland of the Cloak and Suit and Ladies' Aid Society of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Among those who attended were Charles E Schaidt, Pittsburgh; Mrs Henry Schaidt, a niece, Elkins and a brother, George Knatz, Lonaconing.
