F. Press, 1018 West Sherman street, claimed as their victim at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon in the Ottumwa hospital Mrs. Elizabeth Hawkins. The unfortunate women had lingered between life and death since her removal to the hospital and despite the medical attention given her, the burns enveloped too great a portion of her body to overcome. The body was removed to the family residence on West Sherman street this afternoon. Announcement of the funeral will be made later. The accident which caused the death of Mrs. Hawkins happened in a peculiar way. The fire in the range had not been burning as rapidly as usual, the flues having been stopped up somewhat. To hasten the fire, Mrs. Hawkins applied some kerosene, and immediately the flames puffed out the open portion of the stove and ignited her dress. With the flames quickly devouring her clothing, the women, terrified and screaming, rushed into the restaurant, where her sister, Miss Nina Leason, with the assistance of J.A. Moriarity, Charles Phemesch and L. Wilcox, who were awaiting breakfast, endeavored to smother the flames with rugs. Dr. F. W. Newell and Dr. F. W. Bowles were immediately summed. The suffering woman was removed to the hospital. Every effort was made to offset the ravages of the flames, but to no avail. Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her husband, Edward Hawkins, from whom she secured a divorce Saturday, and three children, Goldie, aged 12, Jason, aged 10, and Cinderella, aged 8. She is also survived by her mother and sister. She lived in this vicinity for the past 29 years. Ottumwa Courier - Monday 4 October 1909 - Pg 4 Col 5 ----------------------------------------- FUNERALS Mrs. Elizabeth Leason Hawkins who death occurred yesterday as a result of the frightful burns received on Sunday morning was born September 5, 1879 and is survived aside from her husband, and children by her mother, Mrs. Celinda Leason, a sister Miss Tina and brothers Edward and Jason Leason. The funeral will be held from the residence of Jason Leason, 1040 West Main street, the date being not set yet owing to no word having been heard from a sister of the decedent living in Canada. Mrs. Hawkins was a member of the Royal Neighbors lodge No. 1014. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock by Rev. John W. Pool at the residence of Jason Leason, A brother of the decednt, 1040 W.
