Read More	This is my story by Betty L. Huglin. I was born in a shack down by the river like the comedian on Saturday Night Live. The river was the Blue Earth River. The L. in my name was what I did to prove who I was when my identity was stolen. Found out that didn't work. My parents were William F. Huglin and Florence Josephine (Smith) Huglin. I was born on August 23, 1938, with spina bifida. Nobody had any money, so at one month of age my grandfather's best friend paid for my surgery. We lived in Becroft, Iowa until I was 1 ½ years old and then moved to Rake, Iowa. At the age of 5, I was in the Shriner's Hospital in Minneapolis for 10 months where I had surgery for skeletal defects. The first surgery left some inner bleeding. My dad gave blood to me direct while lying on a stretcher beside me. They found the bleeder. The hospital taught me three things that have stayed with me for all my life: hot to walk with crutches, how to swim, and how to fall without getting hurt. My mother taught me at home for kindergarten and first grade and then again in a one room school for 3rd and 5th grade. I went to high school in Rake, Iowa, and I'll let you guess how I ranked with the 12 others in my class. I got my degree in medical transcription from Mankato, Minnesota. I was in that type of job for 43 years and during that time I had my own transcription business; The silent Secretary. I've worked at the Pillsbury Company in Minneapolis, ISU in Ames, Iowa, St. Joseph's Hospital, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and lastly in Wausau, Wisconsin at the Health Care Center. I must have been a workaholic because I also had a knitting business. I taught myself how to knit. I learned how to play the piano when I was three and then switched to organ and played for 50 years. Like my grandmother, I had to belong to several groups which included Red Cross, Homemakers, Switchboard Hotline, etc. I believe in being a worker bee. My interests included knitting, sewing, reading, music and cats. I have had four cats at one time, but only once. I used to travel a lot before I had the cats. The best thing I ever did for myself was buying a house. I called it my paradise. I've had a good life. "I'm a gambler at heart. Bingo is my game. When the Lord calls my number, I hope I have my free space covered." No flowers please. Donations may be given to the Animal House, Humane Society, or Women's Community Center. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at St. Therese Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am, officiated by Rev. Norman Boneck. John J. Buettgen Funeral Home is assisting the family at this time.
