Description	:	Elizabeth "Mag" Gaines was the sister of Jane Virginia Watkins, the first wife of her husband, Richard Venable Gaines. Her sister had died while giving birth to her fourth child. Apparently, "Mag" loved and cared for the children as if they were her own. A gentlewoman of great culture, beloved by all who knew her, Mag Gaines made as her avocation something which was an innovation in that time; she began to teach the negro slaves at "Do-Well" and from neighboring plantations to read and write. Years later, when old age assistance was first inaugurated by the government, an old negro on being asked how he came to sign his name so well, replied: "Does you recall Miss Mag from de ole Gaines place? She teached me." Mag was a great lady. After her death in 1896, one of her contemporaries asked that she be remembered "for loveliness of character, for every Christian grace that makes life sweeter and more beautiful."
