She was 85. Liz was born in Billings on July 15, 1923, to Ida Mae Primrose Perry and Dr. Wilson James Perry. Liz fondly remembered tossing a ball back and forth across Grand Avenue near her childhood home with her first friend, Lois Vick, long before the days of such busy traffic. Liz was part of the first class to graduate from Billings Sen-ior High School in 1941. She and her treasured school friends Lorraine Baker, Marion Veraldi, Norma Thomas Vaughn, Amy Swaboda, and the late Norma Reitz formed a "Sewing Club" and continued to meet every month for the past 60 years. These were her lifelong best friends, whom she dearly missed when she moved to Helena to be closer to family. Liz attended Billings Business College and worked at Eaton Metal during World War II until she married. After many years as a dedicated mother and homemaker, Liz returned to work as secretary for the Psychology Department at Eastern Montana College. She worked there from 1970 until she retired in 1984. She loved working around the college students. She often met with the "EMC Gals" for lunch after retirement. Elizabeth married her first husband, Roger Keith Hammerstrom, in 1946 and raised five children. She was a member of First Congregational Church and later, the Messiah Lutheran Church. She and Roger loved camping and took their young family camping in Yellowstone Park and Teton National Park every summer. She baked wonderful bread and cinnamon rolls that greeted the kids after school. After the kids were grown, Liz was happiest at family reunions. Roger died in 1981. Liz married second husband, Walter Benner, in 1984. They enjoyed active retirement years and traveled to many exotic places with senior citizen tour groups. They volunteered with RSVP and enjoyed the Senior Citizens' Center luncheons with friends. Liz was very fond of her step-families, Walt's sons Steve (Trish) Benner of Dallas, Texas and Todd (Karen) Benner and their daughter Hailey of Billings. Walt died in 2002. In her 80's, Liz enjoyed the company of special friend, Fred Michael. They attended so many Little League games together, one team "adopted" them as team grandparents. They were once kicked out of the Golden Corral buffet for taking brownies home in their pockets, but were eventually accepted back on good behavior. Liz loved tennis, sewing, and watercolor painting. She loved to wear sparkles and lots of pink. She loved all types of live musical performances, played piano decently herself and encouraged her children to enjoy music as well. She attended high school and middle school band concerts long after her own kids graduated from high school! She en-couraged all her children to get a college education. She completed large, unique, yarn-stitched nature scenes to adorn the walls of her children's homes. She spent over 20 years as a Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader and Boy Scout den mother. Liz cared deeply for others. She was proud of her family and satisfied with her life. She enjoyed her last few years under the loving care of the staff of the Waterford Retirement Community, who treated us all like family. She loved coffee and never met a chocolate chip cookie she didn't like. She died happy. Liz is survived by her children, DiAnn Blesse of Yellowknife, NWT, Canada, Carol (Don) Oberquell of Clyde Park, Sonia (Val) Lundin of Wilton, N.D.; Joan (Gary) Anderson of Helena and Donald (Adella) Hammerstrom of West Rich-land, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and by her brother, Wilson "Bill" Perry of Carmichael, Calif. Memorials are suggested to the Intermountain Children's Home in Helena. No services are planned at this time. A family memorial is planned for summer 2009.
