Read More	Elizabeth Shepherd, the daughter of James Shepherd and Hannah Peters, lived a life on the frontiers of the country in Arkansas, Oregon, and California until she finally moved to a city of Eureka in her old age that must have welcomed the conveniences of electricity, running water, and indoor plumbing. She married John Harvey Blanton in Oregon soon after her family crossed the plains and arrived in Oregon 11 Dec. 1852, a trek that cost the life of her father James and three of her siblings. However, throughout her life she was surrounded by families she had know for decades. In this she was like so many other pioneers whose extended family and related clans lived, worked and even moved together in system that supplied mutual support. So we find that her sister Catherine married her husband's cousin John W. Blanton, and when she moved from Oregon to the woods near Rohnerville, California, several siblings followed with their families neaby. John and Elizabeth's Children: - Mary Jane (b. 8 May 1854, Oregon, d. 28 March 1907, Eureka, Humboldt, Ca.); - James Buchanan (b. 19 December 1856, Oregon, d. 11 March 1858, Oregon); - Francis Marion (b. 2 Sep. 1859, Oregon, d. 3 March 1929); - Hannah Louise (b. 13 Feb. 1862, Oregon, d. 2 July 1908); - Isaac Lee (b. 15 July 1864, Oregon, d. 30 March 1937); - John Harvey, Jr. (b. 2 April 1866, Oregon, d. 13 August 1897); - Laura Ellen "Laury" (b. 4 May 1868, Rohnerville, Humboldt, Ca., d. 12 Oct. 1933, married Jacob Oscar Showers, Jr. on 31 Jan. 1886 in Rohnerville); - Martha Blanche b. 5 May 1872, Humboldt, d. 8 March 1960, Humboldt); - William A. (b. 21 Feb. 1875, Humboldt, d. 12 Dec. 1937); - Elizabeth Ann (b. 12 Sept. 1876, Blanton Prairie, Humboldt, Ca., d. 23 Oct. 1964). Her obituary in the "Humboldt Times" briefly summarizes her life: "Elizabeth, died 29 November 1918 at her home on Whipple Street, Eureka. Age: 82 years, 3 months, born in 1836 in Washington County, Arkansas. Came overland to California in 1852. Maiden name: Sheppard. Widow of John Blanton. Children: Mrs. Jacob O. Showers, Anna, Mattie, Lee, Wm. & Frank Blanton Niece: Mrs. A. L. Dudley." The obituary in the "Humboldt Standard" offers her a brief tribute: "30 Nov 1918 Mrs. Elizabeth Blanton Dead at Age of 82. Another of the few remaining pioneers of the county has answered the last call – Mrs. Elizabeth Blanton, who died at her home on Whipple Street last evening, at the age of 82 years. Mrs. Blanton was a native of Arkansas and came to this county across the plains in 1852. She is survived by the following children : Frank Blanton, of Iaqua, Lee Blanton of Falk and William Blanton of Eureka, Mrs. J. O. Showers of Elk River, Mrs. A. Judd and Mattie Blanton. Her sisters are Mrs. Susan Hutchins of Ruth, Trinity County, and Mrs. Catherine Blanton of Brookings, Ore., and niece, Mrs. A. L. Dudley of this city (this was Lillian, daughter of Susanna). (note - Whipple has been renamed "Fourteenth Street"). John Hutchens, Elizabeth's bother-in-law, died under unclear circumstances as reported in a newspaper story entitled "John Hutchens" on 23 Sept. 1916. The story demonstrates the simple dangers for those who used guns to obtain their food from the woods as was the typical for pioneers who supplemented their diets with whatever game was available. John Hutchens' days as a pioneer were long behind him, but hunting was probably part of his life for as far back as he could remember, and so were the accidents that happened: "On Thursday of last week John Hutchens, a well-known pioneer of the coast, died at this ranch near Ruth, Trinity Co. Deceased was found seated in his wheel-chair in the yard, with a rifle between his knees, a bullet from which had entered beneath his chin, etc. He was 86 years old. He was quite feable of late and had been getting about the place in a wheel-chair. That afternoon, when he had been wheeled into the yard, he asked that his rifle be brought to him, as he desired to shoot any rabbits he might see. The rifle was given him and he was left alone. Soon afterward, people in the house heard a shot and upon going out to see the result of the aged man's marksmanship, found him dead in the chair. "John Hutchens was a native of Illinois and crossed the plains in 1851 settling in Oregon, where with his wife whom he married in 1853, he resided many years. Thence with their family, they came to Humboldt and later went to Trinity Co., where they purchased the ranch. Dec'd is survived by his wife and six children: Joe and Will Hutchens of Ruth; Mollie Woods; Mrs Lydia Kunz of Harris, Calif.; Mrs Lillian Dudley of Eureka, and Mrs Addie Friend of Bridgeville. Also, he leaves a sister, Charity Bomar, in Oregon. "Inquest held Friday by Trinity coroner a verdict was returned stating death was accidental. The investigation revealed marks indicating that Mr Hutchens had dropped the rifle as he sat watching for rabbits. The hammer struck on the steps and the ball pierced his head. His body was taken to Hydesville, for burial, the funeral taking place Sat afternoon."
