On November 3, 1945 she married Hal Schimling, who preceded her in death on October 26, 1998. Betty's political career began in 1951 when she lobbied for professional license regulations. The following year she was appointed by Governor Langlie as Washington State License Inspector, a position she held until 1957. From 1957- 65, she was International Rep- resentative for Barbers & Beauticians International Union, and AFL-CIO Legislative Representative for labor-management relations. In September 1958 she accepted the position of Field Agent for the WA State Labor Council, AFL-CIO. Her assignments included special emphasis in consumer legislation. Betty held the position of Secretary-Treasurer for the Washington Committee on Consumer Interests. She taught cosmetology vocation- al classes at L.H. Bates Voc/Tech Institute from 1967-68. She was also active on many boards and committees, including COPE Field Agent, Governor's Energy Policy Council; Advisory Committee for Women's Institution in Purdy; Board member for Local #11, WA State Selective Service System; Consumer Advisory Committee to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners; member of Board of Directors for Consumer Federation of America, Washington, D.C.; Consumer Credit Counseling Services of King County; Democratic Precinct Committee person, Pierce County Districts 26-33 for 8 years; 1972 Delegate to National Democratic Convention; in 1975, was nominated to "Who's Who of American Women". Betty enjoyed real estate with her dad, and fishing. She is survived by son Marc D. Schimling, owner of Eagle Construction in Tacoma; daughter Debra Christnacht of Fircrest; brother Joe Sander of Alder, WA; grandchildren Libby, Jessica, Andy and Erika; and loyal friend Connie Hayden. The family would like to thank the staff of University Place Care Center and Franciscan Hospice for their loving care and compassion. A memorial reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #174, 1965 S. Union. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Diabetes Association.
