In the Watson home in this city two deaths have occurred since last Thursday, both from pneumonia. J.M. Watson, who recently came to Jamestown and who made his home with his nephew, Elmer E. Watson, died Thursday night at 11 o'clock, following an illness of only four days. Mrs. Elizabeth Watson, who has lived in this vicinty for many years, died Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock, her illness dating from Thursday morning. J.M. Watson was a half brother to Mrs. Elizabeth Watson, first came to Kansas in 1871 with Mrs. Watson and her children when they located on a farm four miles north of Concordia. He remained in Cloud county only a few weeks and then went west, probably to the coast. Until a short time ago nothing was heard of him and the members of the family had given up hope of ever seeing him again. Efforts were made at various times to learn of his whereabouts, but no word came from him until a few months ago when he came to Jamestown to visit his sister and nephew. He spent a few weeks here during the summer months, last July and August, and then left to visit a relative in Oklahoma. From Oklahoma he went to Pueblo, Colo., to visit another nephew and namesake J.M. Watson, then went again to Oklahoma and a few days ago came to Jamestown. He traveled extensively during the forty-years he had been separated from other members of the family, and a great deal of his time was spent in mining. He never married, and aside from the brief sketch of his life given here little is known of his history. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Fairview, conducted by Rev. G.E. Carnahan, and the body was laid to rest in the family lot at Fairview. Mrs. Elizabeth Watson was born in Floyd county, Indiana, June 22, 1838. She died March 29, 1915, in Jamestown, aged 76 years, 9 months and 7 days. She was married to Jedadiah Watson in 1858, and lived on a farm near Evansville, Indiana, until the death of her husband in 1870. Mrs. Watson and her four children came to Kansas in 1871, with her brother, John C. Watson, and settled on a farm four miles north of Concordia, where they lived for 11 years. She then sold the farm and bought a farm at Yuma 5 1/2 miles west of Concordia, where she lived until about three years ago. Three years ago Mrs. Watson and her unmarried son, Elmer moved to Jamestown where they have since resided. She is survived by three sons, a daughter, a brother and a sister. Her daughter is Mrs. Ora E. Hight who lived 2 1/2 miles south of Jamestown. Her oldest son, Elmer, lives in Jamestown, Wm. K. Watson her second son, lives in Concordia, and her youngest son, James M. Watson, resides in Pueblo, Colorado. Her brother is Geo. W. Watson, of Alva, Oklahoma, and her sister is Mrs. Lucinda Hartman, of Evansville, Indiana. Besides these relatives there are eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Watson enjoyed splendid heath for one of her age, and her death, following such a short illness, was a great blow to her children and to her many friends in this vicinity. Last Thursday morning she was taken suddenly ill with what was pronounced a severe attack of grippe which speedily developed into pneumonia, and death occurred at 7:30 o'clock Mondy evening. All of her children were with her during her last hours. She was one of the pioneer women of Cloud county, and her courage and willpower, coupled with a fine disposition and many monst excellent traits of character, made for her a great number of lifelong friends. She was a kind neighbor, a loving mother, and a splendid Christian woman. She united with those of the Methodist faith at the age of twenty-five years, and always lived a consistent Christian life. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at Fairview. There was first a short service at the home in this city, after which the funeral procession went to the beautiful Fairview cemetery, east of Jamestown, where Rev. G.E. Carnahan, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, conducted the funeral service. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield) June 2020
