Patterson and Family (Athens County Gazette, Thursday, January 31, 1901) Ella C. Patterson was born August 7, 1863, in Athens County, Ohio. She exchanged this life for the one at God's right hand December 18, 1900, at five minutes past eight a.m., she being the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Patterson of Albany. Her life began in Alexander township, Athens county, five miles from the scene of her decease. She with her parents, however, have not left the impress of their lives on this community alone, as by choice of circumstances they have been allowed to make and break friendships, by settling and removing in four different states. Hence we who today mingle our tears, and exchange our consoling sentences over our sad, are as but a handfull compared with the host that would, were the facts known to them, engage with us. She was converted and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Hebbardsville at an early age. There she mingled in christian fellowship with the church and Sunday school until 1881, when, at the organization of the Albany C. P. church she, with the entire family became charter members, in which fold she was an untiring and consecrated worker until the Lord said: "Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord." Ella was a woman, an intellectual woman, a christian woman. Solomon once said and we feel that the occasion permits us acknowledging the imperfections of her life to say: "Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellent them all." The seeds of good sown in hearts well tilled by gently influences of her christian life have sprung up into glorous harvest, and multitudes rise up to call her blessed. She had been for nineteen years a teacher in the public schools of this and other states, having recently served the Athens county children's home in that capacity. At the time of her decease she was acceptably serving that institution in the capacity of matron of the girls' dormitory. Letters of condolence from Superintendent, matron, employees and children, in that institution, to the bereaved family are indicative of the esteem in which she was held and the great good she was accomplishing with God's unfortunate children. She came home on Monday, December 8, to remain one day only. Her health was apparently good. She remarked that she wished every one might enjoy such health. But on Monday night she was taken violently sick. Pneumonia of the most dangerous form soon carried her away. During the eleven days of her illness all that physician's skill and brotherly and sisterly love, parental tenderness and loving hearts of friends could do were done, but she went away despite all this. Two days before her death she called for the spiritual advisor and members of the family and asked that a prayer be offered in which she most heartily joined -- not in word but in spirit Now she said: "It is all right, I want to live but I am ready to die." Much more might be said and our thoughts of her would not be expressed still of her life and labor. A beautiful picture of her life may be found in the excellent poems that are rather the expressions of her heart than of mind or pen and that tho' concealed from the world by her modest purpose in her life shall surely find a place among the good and perhaps the great productions of the world in time to come.
