[Waterloo Evening Courier, Saturday, April 14, 1928] ---------------------------- From the Mitchell County Press and Osage Journal, abt. week after April 12, 1928, Osage, Mitchell Co, IA-- "Four well known residents of this county died during the past week--Mrs. Ella I. Hastings of Osage, on Thursday; George H. Edgington of southwest of town, Friday; Wilhelm Schmidt of Mitchell, Friday; and Henry P. West of St. Ansgar, last Tuesday. Life stories of the departed residents follow: ELLA I. HASTINGS. Ella I. Nixon was born in Mottville, Mich., Dec. 25, 1851, and departed this life April 12, 1928. She was the youngest in a family of ten children. Her father died after making an overland trip to California at the time of the gold rush. In 1854 the mother, with three youngest children, in company with Dr. A. H. Moore, came to Mitchell county and located at Spring Grove, near Osage. Deceased was married to Sidney W. Hastings in 1867. To this union were born four sons, one, Willard, having died at the age of five. She attended school at the courthouse and also in the old Bell schoolhouse under Prof. Bush. She also attended the Cedar Valley seminary. She was a charter member of the Shakespearean club and the Eastern Star in Osage, and held prominent offices in both organizations. In the Eastern Star she will long be remembered for having taken the place of Martha very effectively. She was a lover of music and good literature, and an active worker in the Universalist church, singing in the choir for several years and teaching in the Sunday school. She has seen towns and cities builded, business enterprises established, and churches and schools founded. There remain to mourn their loss two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ramsdall of Flandreau, S. D., and Mrs. Louisa Schmedes of San Diego, Cal.; three sons, George and Woods of Havana, N. D., and Donald of Lisbon, N.
