Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg is in charge. Mrs. Nelson died Saturday, July 21, 2001. Mrs. Nelson was born in Brooker, Fla., a daughter of the late Aron Hazen and Ruby Hazen Adams. She attended Florida State College for women and the University of S.C. where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She later served as President of the Tallahassee Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Association. During the years she and her first husband, Addison Shuler Laird, a native of St. Matthews, lived in Florida. Mrs. Nelson was secretary to the Dean of the School Arts and Sciences at Florida State University. Following their retirement she and Mr. Laird moved to St. Matthews. Mr. Laird died in 1962. In 1979, she married Theodore McFadden (Babe) Nelson of St. Matthews, who died in 1989. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Nell Harrison Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Dogwood Garden Club. Surviving are her brother, James A., Hazen of Jacksonville, Fla.; nieces, Dianne Williams Smith of Bonifay, Fla., Cynthia Williams Johnson of Chipley, Fla., Kay Fouts Preston of Redlands, Calif.; a number of great and great-great nieces and nephew also survive.
