She was born Ella Marie Oblender [sic: Oblander] on Sept. 5, 1922, in Ballantine [Yellowstone Co.], and graduated from the Project. Growing up on their farm, Ella learned the love of growing things. She remained close to the area until her final days, through reading the Yellowstone County News and visiting the cemetery each Memorial Day. Mom married our dad, John S. Pickett, Sr., in 1945. They were blessed with a son and two daughters. She worked for many years in the retail business as a cosmetician, where she made many lifelong friends. Everyone that shopped at Evergreen Drug and Osco knew Ella. In 1963, Mom fulfilled her biggest dream, of owning her own home. It had many similarities to the same farm she grew up on. She found fulfillment in sewing, knitting, crafts, baking and gardening. Her true love in life was her garden and her flowers. People always commented on her beautiful yard, especially her roses. Roses were her favorite and she was meticulous in caring for them. In 1973, Ella met and married George Halford. She enjoyed many years with George, fishing and gardening. Together, their garden expanded and they enjoyed sharing their vegetables with family, friends and neighbors. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. During the holidays, you could not find one corner in her home that was not decorated. She became famous for her zucchini bread. She would start baking in the fall and, when the holidays arrived, she had hundreds of mini-loaves frozen and away, ready to give as gifts with her caramel corn to loved ones. Mom loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always remembered their birthdays with a card and a $5 bill, and enjoyed bragging about their accomplishments. Ella was a wonderful friend to many. She was a warm, caring mother, wife, grandmother, sister and aunt. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Amelia Oblender; her husband, George; five brothers, four sisters and granddaughter Shonna. She is survived by her three children, John Pickett, Jr. (Claudine), Linda (Jim) Patenaude and Patsy (Les) Morse of Billings; grandchildren, Dawn, Janette, Lindsey, Chad, Johnathon, Chase, Ryun, Drew, Tyler, Rob, Brenda and Brian; 12 great-grandchildren; her brother, Leo (Mary Lou) Oblender of Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.... Cremation has taken place at Smith’s Crematory. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Smith’s West Chapel, 304 34th St. West. Interment will follow at Mountview Cemetery….
