Dawson was born March 7, 1824 in Yorkshire, England, and Phoebe Esther Hopkins was born September 3, 1829 in Canada. They were married November 23, 1854 and came to Jackson County, and then to Audubon County in 1878, and lived on Church Street. The county was new; they braved many hardships and were among the early pioneer settlers in Audubon County. John W. Dawson learned the trade of a wheelwright, and for many years, was the best wagon maker in the county. His shop was south of the courthouse... Dawson was born March 7, 1824 in Yorkshire, England, and Phoebe Esther Hopkins was born September 3, 1829 in Canada. They were married November 23, 1854 and came to Jackson County, and then to Audubon County in 1878, and lived on Church Street. The county was new; they braved many hardships and were among the early pioneer settlers in Audubon County. John W. Dawson learned the trade of a wheelwright, and for many years, was the best wagon maker in the county. His shop was south of the courthouse where the telephone building now stands. Seven children came to bless this home. They were members of the First Christian Church and were buried in Maple Grove Cemetery. John W. Dawson died June 2, 1903, and Phoebe Esther Hopkins Dawson died March 19, 1914. Their son, Frank Dawson (born Oct.2, 1855, died August 9, 1927), married Celia Fulton (born July 25, 1855, died August 18, 1927) in 1882 and their children were: Nellie Gertrude (born January 29, 1883, died August 3, 1883), Ella Rae (born January 29, 1883, died February 2, 1968), Lula Grace (born January 18, 1885, died May 4, 1903), Ada Isebell (born January 30, 1893, died MArch 31, 1953), Clarence Earl (born April 26, 1896, died November 1959). From Page 36 B, History of Audubon, Iowa, Audubon Centennial 1878-1978: "Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Graves and five children came to Audubon County in 1879. They settled one and a half miles east of Ross and were one of the first pioneer farm families in the county. They moved to Viola Township, Section 6, in 1882, which became known as the Graves' family farm. Their son Charles C. Graves, was born April 29, 1875 in Jasper County, and died November 29, 1961. He married Ella Rae Dawson March 20, 1907. They resided on the Graves' family farm all of their lives. Born to this union were two children: Charles Russell Graves, born April 5, 1908 and died August 6, 1966--served in the U.S. Army from April 1942 to December of 1945, one year overseas in South Pacific, honorable discharge World War II; Mary Graves, born in August of 1917, now resides on the Graves' family farm in Viola Township, Audubon County, Iowa. The Graves' were members of the Audubon United Methodist Church."
