Perhaps it started as Swenson and was changed to Swanson when they moved to Dakota Territory? It was still Swenson in 1885, but by 1900 it was Swanson. The family members are also buried with markers that show Swanson. Ella was born to Noah B. and Pauline "Polly" Swenson in Baytown, Washington County, Minnesota on November 25, 1878. (Source: Minnesota Births and Christenings index, FHL film index numbers 1954946 and 2079669) Noah was born in Sweden and Pauline was born in Minnesota. The Minnesota 1880 Census shows "E. Ella" living with parents "Noach" and Pauline Swenson and sister "W. May" in Woodbury, Washington County, Minnesota. The North Dakota 1885 Territorial Census shows Ella living with her family (parents Noah and Pauline Swenson, siblings May, Ernest, Otis and Tilda Pickler, 28 year old sister to Pauline) and boarder August Olson (30) in Oriska, Dakota Territory. (Page 17, Line 29) According to the 1900 census, Ella was a school teacher and was living with her family (Noah & Polly Swanson and siblings Earnest, Otis, Victor, Bernard and Hira) in "Valley City Township". A brother, Chancy, was born in 1900 and died in 1904. There are no census records reflecting this child as nearly all of the 1890 census records were destroyed in a fire in 1921. I was able to find information on Chancy in the Bismarck Tribune. Ella was married to Christian August Paetow, son of Christian Heinrich Ludevich Paetow. They were married March 19th, 1902 in Valley City. (Source: Marriage Records from Barnes County Recorders Office, Book E, Page 143) I also found her maiden name information here as Swanson. Ella and Christian had one child, Ernest Paetow, who died 5 days after he was born in 1904. Christian August Paetow remarried to Minnie Sampson (father Sigurd Sampson...unable to read mother's name on marriage record) on June 20, 1906 at Christ Lutheran in Menominie, Wisconsin. Minnie was born in Wisconsin and both of her parents came from Norway. Unknown burial location for Christian August Paetow at this time. Oregon Death Index shows that he died August 11, 1926 in Marion, Oregon. Ella Paetow is buried next to her father-in-law, Christian H. L. Paetow.
