Read More	Ellen Almira DARROW-FORD was born 1847 near Plymouth Twp., Ashtabula Co. OH the daughter of George W. DARROW & Ellen STONE. She married 1866 in Clayton Co. IA: Henry A. FORD and died 1924 in RyderWard.CoND. Ellen Almira DARROW died 1924 at Ryder, Ward Co., North Dakota, & buried next to husband at Cleveland in Stutsman Co., North Dakota. They lived in FlorenceMarionKS 1871-1874 and then returned to Iowa. She & Henry A. FORD(1843ENG-1912ND) left their home in Elk Twp. of Clayton Co., Ia. for Howard City, Miner Co., South Dakota around 1884 where on March 21, 1889 they recorded a claim on 160 acres of land Township 108 Sec. 17(Where Wm. A. FORD in 1884 had preceded them) – probably Grafton Township. The Miner County Democrat reported in 1891 that Henry had threshed seventy acres of wheat and had 1,200 bushels. In the winter(DEC1891) he seems to have traveled to Madison WI(Prob. MadisonLakeSD) to appear before pension board. On the farm in South Dakota, Ellen DARROW-FORD was said to be found feeding the Indians before feeding her own children as part of her strategy of keeping the Indians friendly. This is in contrast to her brother-in-law, John FORD, who ran the Indians off his property and soon after saw his barn burn to the ground in what was thought was reprisal by the Indians. After selling their farm, Henry and Ellen moved into Howard where Ellen ran a boarding house called the ‘Old Wheeler House'. In the 1900 SD Census, Henry is listed as a hotel keeper. Prior to that in October 1893(L. V. FORD Files), Henry was indicted for ‘Maintaining a Common Nuisance – Henry willfully, feloniously, maliciously and unlawfully kept and maintained a tenament, known as the Perkins Building, … wherein intoxicating liquors were sold as a beverage and where persons were permitted to resort for the purpose of diring intoxicating liquors as a beverage'. Henry was fined $100 and all of his property except personal items was confiscated and ordered to refrain from running such establishment for one year. However in 1895, Henry was again indicted on the same charges with a similar sentence. Henry had been born APR1843 in Lincolnshire, England & arrived in the USA in 1846. In Ashtabula Co. IA he enlisted in the 50 Ohio Infantry Regiment(Co. A) during the Civil War. In 1920, Ellen DARROW FORD travelled from Ryder, ND(2004:POP:95) to Manchester, IA to attend Sylvester & Louisa DARROW's golden wedding anniversary. Ellen died of cancer of the liver & duodema complicated by profound jaundice from which she suffered for about four months prior to death. She had lived in Ryder since 1916 where she found the climate favorable for her hay fever & Henry FORD had preceded her in death at Cleveland in Stutsman Co., ND.
