Description	:	Ellen Elizabeth Gammon, second daughter of William E. and Caroline Gammon, was born near Leon on what was known as Eden Prairie. On September 1, 1855, her parents had settled but recently in this wilderness, and it was in this pioneer atmosphere that she was raised. She had four sisters, the oldest Mrs. O. E. Read More	Ellen Elizabeth Gammon, second daughter of William E. and Caroline Gammon, was born near Leon on what was known as Eden Prairie. On September 1, 1855, her parents had settled but recently in this wilderness, and it was in this pioneer atmosphere that she was raised. She had four sisters, the oldest Mrs. O. E. Bassett, of Farnhamville, Iowa; Mrs. W.A. Allbaugh of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Mrs. J. L. Mitchell of Leon; Mrs. H.E. Davisson of Washington, D.C. All are deceased. Her only brother, Roy Gammon lives in Leon. In a double wedding ceremony with her sister Laura at the parental home on November 7, 1878, she was united in marriage to John W. Long of Leon, Iowa. To this union were born four sons, Lorne of Hardin, Montana, now deceased; Jamie G., of Chillicothe, Missouri; Roy J., of Detroit, Michigan; and Renan, who died in 1925. In addition to raising of this family of boys, Mrs. Long took Audrey Hallback, now Mrs. Audrey Olson, of Omaha, Nebraska, as a child of one and one-half years and cared for her until she was past eighteen years of age. Mrs. Long's interest in education manifested itself early in those pioneer days, teaching a school in Mills county at the age of fifteen years. While she received most of her education in the Eden Prairie country school, she also attended the Normal school at Leon during the summer, while teaching the rest of the year. She attended Leon high school one year, and her last two years in teaching was spent as primary teacher in Leon Public Schools. The formal education she received was only a foundation upon which she built. Mrs. Long was widely read and interested in the mental development of all those about her. In 1905 after a visit with her girlhood friend, Laura Dye Sampson of Des Moines, she organized a small circle of friends and they named it the Reading Circle, and she is the last one of them to depart from this life. Many helps in the preparatory of talks and papers were given freely to her nieces and nephews. To her, education had a purpose and that purpose was to develop honorable, useful and informed citizens, the three points upon which our democracy is now laying so much stress. She was also a member of the D.A.R. and when a young girl joined the Church of Christ. She loved nature in all its beauties. She was always glad to give a helping hand to make the pathway of life easier for others. Services were held at the Stewart Funeral Home, August 7th, Clergyman, Reverend Robert Austin of Chillicothe, Missouri, with burial in Leon, Iowa cemetery. Those who attended the funeral of Ellen Gammon Long were: Roy W. Long and wife, Chillicothe, Mo.; Norvel Heston and wife, Kansas City; Mildred Dillon, Kansas City; R.C. Allbaugh and wife, Earle Grove, Iowa; L.G. Allbaugh, wife and son, Robert, of Ames, Iowa; Barrett Allbaugh and wife, Emmetsburg, Iowa; Audrey Olson and daughter Janice, Omaha, Nebraska; George Gardner, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Clate Gammon and wife, Los Angeles, California.
